You can't trace people in Canada the way you can in the UK, in particular by the electoral roll. It's a criminal offence to disclose information from the electoral roll equivalent, here!

And vital records (births, marriages, deaths) are protected from disclosure for decades.

Since you've actually located Iris's family, it seems that is the best (only) way to proceed. Perhaps if you try to develop a cordial relationship with them, they will think of the best way to broach the subject with Iris.

jax Report 12 Apr 2011 12:52

I think the only way of tracing is this white pages which we already tried. They like to keep everything secret these Canadians.

Janey will be able to tell you

jax

jax Report 11 Apr 2011 18:22

So she is still living? that could be a bit tricky if no one knows of her past

So it is deff the correct Iris...thats good

There was no record of John going to Canada...so maybe he did not go??? I was just guessing he joined the family there by perhaps working for a passenger ship

I have been to the library today looking at the Kellys and electoral registers, Iris and husband John first show on the ER 1952-3 living with her parents at 60 Cromwell Rd. From 1953-55 Iris and John are not with them. 1956-1958 Iris and John at 19 Cromwell Rd. After that, nothing. In 1959 another family are living at 19 Cromwell.

However Kellys Directory still shows John at that address until 1974 which is clearly wrong as the registers show otherwise.

Must be me JC I could'nt see a marriage...I searched the two addresses in Cromwell road for David and they were not there in 1911.

Shall have another look...must be having a bad day lol was that the one in Morpeth JC discounted that one as well out of the area...but could be of course. there are a few that I can see but not in Hampshire area

I wondered about that too just hypothetically -- people did return after emigrating. (My gr-grparents spent several years and had two kids in Australia before going back to England and then coming to Canada!)

David has PMed me (aargh) about looking for Iris's husband's parents to see whether they lived in Cromwell Rd via the 1911 census. Well, since their children were born in the late 1920s, I doubt they were married in 1911. ... Looks like they married in 1920. I'll PM him the details, and their deaths.

David, I don't think there's a lot of point in tracing the husband's parents - ? The info I sent about the cousin -- is your dad still considering how best to approach things?

jax

jax Report 3 Apr 2011 13:07

Thats strange Julie maybe they came back? Hopefully David is going to try and make contact through a cousin...perhaps the best idea considering

I have copies of Kellys directories for 1966 and 1972 and Iris's husband was showing at 19 Cromwell Rd then. Have pm'd David. They only give householder not the names of others living there but have offered to go to the library to look at electoral registers if needed

jax I missed you saying two children, just as I'd missed the second child - duh! Don't know how I managed that.

Tracked that child a bit, found a location, but w/o ER access (and Tracey doesn't seem to have read my latest PM), can't find contact info, so the first one should be good for now. Have had lovely PMs from David whose dad is going to ponder on it all.

From everything you guys had done already (I saw that about Cromwell Road back a page too), it certainly sounded like that was the right Iris. And from there it seems a pretty certain chain from Iris's husband to the person I've found contact info for and sent to David.

jax Report 3 Apr 2011 01:09

I dont know how big this Cromwell road is but David has 60 cromwell road on his birth cert and the family lived at 19 cromwell road when they went to Canada???

I'm sending you a private message with the info, David.

This is all assuming that we've started from the right Iris! Fingers crossed.
