The birth cert would but she gave her birthday as 20th March when she went to Canada but she must have knocked a couple of years off her age for some reason as there are no Iris's with that surname born in 1929

I've found the person I'm sure is the child of the husband's brother, on the electoral roll with their spouse and two children -- but only for 2002-2003. The second of the children was born in the same place as the female death I posted above.

I see them now also in 2004-2005 ... the children are likely too young to have married before the 2005 cutoff for the index ...

I can't guess right for where they're living, so far. Still looking for info ...

Okay, I have found contact info for the child of Iris's husband's brother.

jax I'm going to send the info to you for review first.

David -- this could be a very sensitive process, I'm sure you know!

But the hope would be that Iris's husband's brother's child would be in touch with Iris's children.

Right, I'm just going to go ahead and be indiscreet for a minute.

Name: Spencer Henry T Riley
Birth Date: 23 Apr 1927
Death Registration Month/Year: Nov 1984
Age at death (estimated): 57
Registration district: Southampton
Inferred County: Hampshire
Volume: 20
Page: 1232

The husband's brother's death.

The brother had one child.

This could be the brother's wife's death.

Name: Joyce Evelyn Riley
Birth Date: 5 Sep 1926 (matches quarter of birth registration)
Death Registration Month/Year: Sep 2005
Age at death (estimated): 79
Registration district: Harlow
Inferred County: Essex, Middlesex
Register number: 35B
District and Subdistrict: 472/1B
Entry Number: 214

Those two certificates (the first one at least) might give the name of a family member. Quite likely, if I'm right about the second one, it would be the one child. If so, the location could be a clue to where that child is now.

The child would be the child of of Iris's husband brother. Quite possibly the child would know where their Canadian cousins are.

Okay, so the indication is that she was married when she travelled.

And he just stayed behind in Canada when he travelled there in the course of his work? Not likely if he was navy. ;) More so if he was commercial crew maybe.

jax

jax Report 2 Apr 2011 23:46

I am only seeing a Naval or working on the passenger ships as that would probably be one of the biggest employers for that area.

If David gets the certificates as recommended -- marriage certificate for Iris, births for sons -- and wants to send me the full names of those three people privately, I can try some more searching.

Sometimes obituaries show up in google searches, for instance for the death of Iris or her husband, if he came to Canada, and having the full names can help narrow those searches down.

On the possibility that the husband was in the navy or some such (although too young for WWII) and possibly maintained that connection in Canada, I checked at the Canadian Legion's Last Post site but there was no death notice for that name.

I'm tending not to agree that the navy possibility is a huge probability. Many people immigrated to Canada in the 1950s, and I don't see a naval connection as being connected with that for any particular reason.

jax

jax Report 2 Apr 2011 23:27

I would think he was already there as she travelled as a housewife along with a couple of other women from the same area together with thier children. Thats what makes me think he could be in the Navy or work on the ships and also living in Southampton seems logical

It matters to my mood. ;)

As far as I can tell, she and the two sons travelled to Canada alone. Do we know whether the husband was deceased (can't see a death) or preceded them? Or, third option, the couple was estranged.

If she remarried in Canada, one possibility, there is no way of finding the record, as marriage records are sealed for 85 years in Ontario, for example. The same would be true for her death, as those records are sealed for 75 in years in Ontario, shorter periods in some other places, but still it would probably be too recent, even for the half of the provinces that have any records searchable on line. Certainly no records of births of any other children she might have had would be accessible. Of course it's possible that she's still living, in her mid-80s.

I tried googling the sons' names at www.google.ca (select "pages from Canada" after getting results), but found nothing definite. There's a musician by the name of one of the sons ... but the name is certainly not unique.

If Iris remarried, quite likely the sons' surname would have been changed to the stepfathers', as they were quite young.

I don't see a death or remarriage for the husband in England ...

Canada is the black hole that people move to, when it comes to records, I'm afraid. Google and the telephone directory are about the only resources there are. I'll give the searching another bit of a go ...

jax PMed me to have a look ... but didn't give me the url, grrr ... so I do a search, and first thing I find is

http://www.genesreunited.co.uk/boards.page/board/trying_to_find/thread/1263188

This is the how-many-eth thread about the same thing now, then?

It was made very clear in that last one, which was not the first one, that this is not how it is done.

It's really unbelievable that you would start this thread without a mention of all the info you already had or that had already been provided to you.

Doesn't put me in a mood to spend much time.
