James, it was 1831. People didn't know how to read or write, let alone spell their names. ;)

The answer to my question is that the baptism record for Robert is extracted -- taken directly from parish records by a Mormon team, not submitted by an anonymous Mormon or other person.

The batch number is C008622. If you search at

http://www.familysearch.org/eng/search/igi/search_igi.asp

for births/baptisms with surname Millier and parents John and Mary in that batch you'll see a total of I think 6 baptisms (the search also produces results with similar surnames, e.g. Mellars) who are possibly siblings of Robert.

Thank you Lindsey, TonyOz and JaneyCanuk,
The info you have sent is brilliant and seems spot on. As John Clarke Miller returned to England do you have any record of what happened to his mother and father. Did they remain in Oz?

Hi Lindsey,
Thank you for that. I had seen the Robert C Miller in the 1851 census age 20 who was a coal merchants son living at Bridge St, Worksop. At the time he was unmarried. Is this the same family as the middle name of Clark has an [e] on the end according to the marriage and death certs?

There ya go, as I was typing, Lindsey was confirming my hypothesis. ;)

Run-on sentence narratives are so hard for unrelated people to follow ...

I can't find the 1871 census. Could you just reproduce it for us? What does it say for his place of birth in particular?

"Australian British subject" would normally indicate that he was born in Australia but although born abroad was a British subject (i.e. born to a British father).

In that case there would of course be no birth registered in England.

Lindsey -- submitted or extracted record? (re 1831 baptism of father)

My GF's sister Elizabeth Newton, born 5 Feb 1864 in Donington, Lincs, married a John Clarke Miller bc 1861, at St John's Gainsborough, Lincs on 1 Jun 1885. According to the marriage cert he is a gentleman and an Australian British Subject. His father was Robert Clarke Miller a chemist bc 1840 place of birth unknown. John Clarke Miller was living at 8 Patrick Rd, West Bridgford, Notts for the 1891 census age 30. He died 10 Sep 1898 at West Bridgford, Notts. I have contacted the GRO for a copy of his birth certificate and they have looked 1 year either side of 1 Jan 1861 but been unable to produce a certificate. Can anybody help me further with this person or give me advice as how to find his earlier details and his family. The earliest record of John Clarke Miller is 1871 census where he was a boarderer at Clough House, New Hereford St, Clough Lane, Sheffield, Yorks age 10.
