Well there's no guarantees at all -- even that you'll get a reply, and then that there will be any actual info to be had -- but I think PMing the person with

Richard Bateman 1778 Arundel West Sussex

in their family tree is the first thing I'd do!

Paul

Paul Report 21 Apr 2011 01:05

You mention this richard bateman 1778,Never come across him before .
The census information about frederick and anne redman is correct.
Woodmancott is by popham mentioned in 1851 census.
THE SLINDON bateman i think in the1700-1800 appears to be mostly roman catholic.
I don't think i have contacted thosed with the other bateman trees.
I haven't got any birth certificate for above two children,i will have to check, but i don't think they were registered.

Found this via pilot.familysearch where place of birth is properly transcribed as "Nr Arundel":

Name: Mark Bateman
Age: 78
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1783
Relation: Widower
Where born: N Armeael, Sussex, England
Civil parish: Westminster St Margaret
Occupation says: Pensioner Crown Serv, I think.

1851

Name: Mark Bateman
Age: 68
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1783
Relation: Head
Spouse's Name: Jane Bateman - born Devonport c1781
Where born: Hindon, Sussex, England -- it says Slindon, of course
Occupation: Gardener
Civil parish: Westminster St Margaret

1841 in same place, no occupation stated, says born in county for both Mark and Jane.

I think this is another indication of the Arundel connection for Bateman, and that it may actually have been Slindon (less recognized the farther from home one got, so more likely to be called simply Arundel). Mark would be around the same age as the elusive Richard, quite possibly a brother.

Three children were born to a Mark Bateman and Jane in St Germans, Cornwall, in the 1810s. The population of that area was interchangeable with Devonport -- in fact bits were both Devon and Cornwall depending on the census year (my grx2 grfather was born in Devonport, he married into a family from St Germans and area) -- so I think those are children of the same Mark and Jane.

Two people have in their trees here at GR:

Mark Bateman 1782 Slindon Sussex

Have I asked this already? Are you in touch with the person who has in their tree here at GR? --

Richard Bateman 1778 Arundel West Sussex ...

I'd just search for Batemans born in Sussex 1770-1810 like ...

JaneyCanuck Report 20 Apr 2011 18:40

For info, there are two baptisms in the IGI that match children in the 1851 household:

EDWARD REDMAN
Christening: 18 APR 1841 Wonston, Hampshire, England
Father: FREDERIC REDMAN
Batch No.: C145061

Hannah Redmon
Christening: 21 OCT 1838 Woodmancott, Hampshire, England
Father: Frederick Redmon
Mother: Anna Redmon
Batch No.:
I034665

The second is not a regular "extracted" record.

I do keep assuming that Paul has a child's birth certificate.

And so much for "all the facts you have" ... three pages later.

Paul, you appeared to dispute the censuses I posted for Frederick and Ann Redman and children for 1841, 1851 and 1861.

If you have different info, please provide it.

Paul

Paul Report 20 Apr 2011 18:09

I ideally want to find anne bateman supposedly born arundel c.1804,

Simon

Paul
Can you please clearly and precisely state what you require to know with all the facts you have.

Paul

Paul Report 20 Apr 2011 11:54

It wasn't a professional who put me onto this custom/excise thing, rather I think i did come across a richard bateman who was a excise officer, this was some time back

Simon

Simon Report 20 Apr 2011 11:29

I was joking about that too!

This one might become another classic thread

For real Simon?? Because if there are parallel searches going on, that's another station where I get off the train. ;)

Oh Paul, don't grasp at straws, you'll drown!

If we went only by names, I would have been right when I thought for 10 seconds that my gr-grfather's sister's husband was an Admiral who tried to save the Lusitania! But no, he was just a once-wealthy bankrupt gambler whose surname wasn't even Coke in his ancestors' day, and he quickly changed to McCock then, allegedly in their honour, but really to escape creditors, if you ask me. ;)

There likely weren't hundreds of Richard Batemans around in the early 1800s, but I'm sure there was more than one. There were a good couple of dozen in the 1841 census, and that's not counting any who died in the 30 or 40 preceding years.

You start with what you know ... and work from there. Never grab a straw just because it's the only one you've found.

Oh, and if it was a "professional" who put you on to that one ... I hope it was cheap. It was a "professional" who told my mum's cousin that her grandfather Ernest Augustus Monck (that big thread) might have been from Ireland ... or Cornwall ... or Germany. It was me who found out that he actually was from Cornwall, as his 1901 census entry says -- it's just that his name was actually Ernest Augustus Hill ...

Ipswich doesn't seem to be connected with your Batemans, does it?

Paul

Paul Report 20 Apr 2011 00:01

You know i was saying that richard bateman was an custom man, perhaps that should be excise man(i can't give iyou a source, although i do remember once discussing with a professional about this).
In the gentlemen's magazine, its mentions a richard bateman, excise man who died in ipswich 1819,leaving wife and 4 children.
above richard bateman not to be confused with one who died in 1733 or the ones living in 1630s-166os who also have excise connections.

I think Paul has been scared off to Rootschat!

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 19 Apr 2011 23:20

Same old thread as the other time, Simon -- that one was for Paul. Actually it's an example of how not to start out -- I'd started it specifically because our Lew had offered to look for particular info, which is why it starts in the middle and goes in every direction from there. ;)

I don't have a lot of my own threads here, I fear! Not of the TTF kind, anyhow.

Paul, anytime you do want to just post some names, dates and places, go ahead, we'll always look. Heck, maybe Simon would even take a shot!

Simon

Simon Report 19 Apr 2011 23:14

LOL

I will take a look, I find your threads absolutely riveting but I do lead a very sheltered life.

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 19 Apr 2011 22:34

I did, I realized as soon as I clicked. But not fair to poor bystanders to goad them -- they probably take you seriously!

I got to say "shame" to you again though, didn't I?

Oh, and if you get to bore people with your thread, so do I.

Perhaps you should take notice of Janey.

Get all the information you have and state clearly what you require.

Probably best delete this thread and start again.
