Find Ancestors

Looking for the birth of George Dixon including parents and any siblings. The information I have so far is

Approximate date of birth 1808-1810.
Place: Deal UK which I think is in Kent. Do not know if this is his place of birth he said he was a "native of Deal in England".

Occupation: Millwright or labourer

Convicted of stealing lead on February 1828 sentenced to transportation.

At time of conviction his age was put as 19 years.

Transported to Australia on the Albion on 29 May 1828.

I have his marriage and death after arriving in Australia. Need to work out which George Dixon he was in the UK.

there are six George Dixon's born 1808 in Kent that I can see, but none in Deal

Hmm I thought I had put a reply on h ere. Wonder if I dumped it elsewhere. Thank you for your reply I will go look where I have hidden mine. When I searched Kent Parish Records I came across a list of Deal Freemen these names were in the list. Keeping for reference.

Edit. Nope can't find it. I said, thank you, I have done the search trees bit on GR and sent some messages to people with George Dixon in their tree. Because I can't use census info I am about to start searching parish registers. Hopefully there are some available.

I have emailed the Kent archives thingy and asked them if I could have access to the CD which contains the Deal parish records. If I can beg, borrow, steal or buy a copy that might answer my question. Providing of course Mr Dixon did come from there.

IGI have a couple of G. Dixon from the Kent area. I need to be careful because I know he was not in the UK after 1828.

Well that is going no where. Currently waiting for Cantebury Cathedral to reply to my email. Well, that's where the info is supposed to be.

Birth place is named as Waterford Ireland. Above record names place of residence as Clonmale, if I am reading it correctly.

I am looking for birth of Anne, marriage of Andrew and Johanna and any other children of the marriage.

For your info the parishes covered by my CD are St Andrews, St Alphage, St Mary Bredin, St Mary Bredman, Christchurch, St Dunstan, St George, Holy Cross, St Mary Magdalene, St Mildred, St Martin, St Peter, St Paul and All Saints. The index has been prepared by the Kent Family History Society and is very useful because, as you can imagine, unless you know which parish something happened in you have to plough through 16 sets of parish records.

I was going to suggest watching out for colonial spelling errors: the name could be Dickson. My young daughter-of-the-US-revolution friend in North Carolina is descended from many Marcums in the southeastern states, but they were Markhams before they crossed the water. Spelling often didn't travel well. But there's only one Dickson couple in Deal in 1841.

Oh, and duh, you have him in English records as Dixon.

Ah, but there are Dixson-s in Kent. A George baptised 1782, and a John c1806 with wife Ann in 1841. Just for info.

Deal and Walmer are often quoted in the same breath and are in East Kent on the coast just along from Dover. The parish church of Deal is St. Leonard's if that helps.

Hi guys - I have a KFHS CD which includes St George, Deal baptisms 1781-1822. Looking through quickly, there doesn't seem to be a George Dixon (or anything else that looks like the surname).

Got to go but will 'dump' all male baps for your perusal in the morning, if not before.

This I think is him. He was transported to Australia aboard the Albion May 1828.

simply because on his death cert George's occupation is listed as "carpenter". There is no George listed in the 1841 census but by that time he was in Australia.


If Sophie was 28 in 1841 she would have been born in 1813 and could have had an older brother. Conjecture and supposition.

James Charles Coke, brother of Ada the Actress's father-in-law, was a timber merchant from Wales in the mid-1850s. (He had wives in Wales, Chile, Australia and England, in that order but not necessarily sequentially.)

He has a park named after him in Norwood, South Australia, and a local university has a large collection of his and his son's personal papers.

His son wasn't no carpenter! I believe he founded a railway in Chile ...

I think that timber merchant referred to a more high-flying economic status than lumber dealer, say. But - not necessarily. Would it be more likely, though, that carpenter was a trade that George learned and took up in Australia?

What did people steal lead for?

I had some clients when I was in law school charged with theft over $1000 for stealing a lot of copper wire. They were students and had lifted one of those wooden spools from a construction site to use as a coffee table, as we did. Unfortunately for them, it still had the copper wire on it ...

AuntyS tells me she is questioning some other research she's seen but was hesitant to put it in the thread, but I said hey, we question trees at Ancestry all the time. ;)

So I checked it out and have pretty definitively debunked it, and I'll summarize here.


"If this thread (from trees at Ancestry) is correct and George Dixon was born in 1822 he would have been six years old when convicted of stealing and transported. His daughter Mary Ann would have been born when he was twenty (feasible). I have his death 26 Sep 1844 and burial 27 Sep 1844 in Australia. His age is shown on the burial as 35. So how does he father three more children Grace in 1850, Knowles in 1860 and Helen in 1865. As an example Grace is listed as being born in Balmain NSW father George Dixon and mother Anne Mandeville. Balmain is in Sydney a long, long way from where George lived and died in the Clarence River area."

The trees on Ancestry are bunkum. The George and Anna who are the parents of those children are totally different people, who married in England.
