I started, hm, around 2003. I cut my own teeth on that mystery gr-grf of mine, about whom I knew nothing except his own false story about his father. Took some months to figure out who he really was, but I got him nailed down in the end -- and two years ago was told a tale by the son of one of my mum's older first cousins (also a grandchild of the man in question) that clinched the wild theory.

My gr-grf was Ernest Augustus Monck, father Francis Monck. Except no such person was ever born, and no such father existed. I ferreted out, just from a string of coincidences in records, that he was really Ernest Augustus Hill, the change having happened sometime in the mid-late 1870s. Well, my mum's cousin didn't know anything about that, but it turned out she knew the reason for it: he had deserted from the British military after 5 years in India when he was due for discharge and was told instead he was being sent to Afghanistan. (Do things never change?) And he lived the rest of his life -- to a very old age in Canada -- having nightmares about the old queen coming to get him.

Ernest Hill's first wife had died in 1873, shortly after the marriage and birth of their child. The second Anglo-Afghan War started in 1878. Ernest Monck first appeared in the 1881 census. A 100% perfect fit.

(Oh garbage, I now have to go through and fix all the colons turned into stupidfaces. I think I'll just wait and see whether the management here fixes that problem soon as we have been pleading with them to do.)

Oh, and my No.1's eyes glaze over totally whenever I mention the word genealogy. Except when I found one of my ancestors in the military around 1814. That actually seemed to be something he could get a grip on and marvel at.

Received Robert and Hannah's marriage certificate today, a bit disappointing.

He married on the 20/03/1871 to Hannah Barraclough. He was 19 and she was 18. No addresses for either, just Low Wortley. It does confirm I have the correct Hannah though, as her Father was Samuel Barraclough, a weaver and thats who I had! Witnesses are George Whitehouse and Ellen Worsnap(?) and they married at the parish church of Leeds, which I think is St Peters???

He married under the name, Robert Henry Wilks Gaunt. There is nothing in the space for the fathers name or fathers profession.

I've ordered the Gaunt/Brown marriage Cert. so I'm hoping that might reveal more AND I'm still waiting for my Brown person to open his email!!!

Nothing for father's name -- to be expected since there was no father on his birth certificate. Had just hoped that since he'd switched his surname, he knew and would have named his father ...

The Gaunt/Brown marriage certificate should be interesting -- even for ruling out which is something we all gotta do sometime. The info Gaunt gives should make it possible to find her in censuses as Gaunt -- or not. And to match her to Wilks in censuses -- or not. ;)

Mind updating? Heavens no! It's what the threads are for. You never know which bit of info might lead someone reading to find something else.

Your Brown contact ... probably signed on here years ago and has been through three email addresses since then and never updated their email address in their account here, so has never got notice of your message. It happens more often than not, unfortunately.

I've got a wild theory to put to you.

I thought, before I moved on and put my time into the Beckett side of my family, I would look at the Gaunt-Wilks thing with fresh eyes once more.

We are kinda sure that Elizabeth was born a Wilks, called herself Gaunt when she had Robert and then married a Brown.

Well, we never found Elizabeth in 1851, so I searched for Elizabeth Gaunt in 1851, thinking maybe she called herself this before Robert was born. WELL...I found a

Richard Lister(?) Gaunt 31 - woollen manufacture- employed 100 hands- at Lees Road in Hunslet, Kirkstall, Leeds, birth place Skipton.

Jane Gaunt- wife- 42!!!-


Elizabeth 24- has ,, as if she is called Gaunt too But it says SERVANT!!! NOT DAUGHTER!!!

SO...do you think Richard who was 31 and had a 42 year wife fancied a bit of the other with a 24 year old servant girl???

So would have been nearly ready to give birth , being around 8months pregnant.

I have tried to search for Richard and Jane after this, to see if the Elizabeth was still with them, because mine was with Mr Brown in 1861 but I cant find them!

Just seems strange that I cant find her in 1851 and there is an Elizabeth living with Gaunts as a servant...and she was down as a Gaunt but not daughter, but a servant.

Not seeing anybody in 1841 either ... but note that Richard and Jane Who didn't marry until almost 1851 census time. I wonder whether that Elizabeth was that Jane's daughter.

I think it's interesting that they married in Hampshire where Jane was from ... Richard's from Yorkshire ... and coincidentally another Gaunt marries in the same place and quarter. Did Jane marry as Gaunt?
