Port Vue is 17km SE of the fork of the Ohio in Pittsburg: both are in Allegheny Co.

I presume you've been searching the US census via:
https://www.familysearch.org/s/collection/list#page=1®ion=NORTH_AMERICA

Thus, you can access the 1900 image (NB the 1890 census was 99.9% destroyed by fire).
You can also access the 1920/30 census via:

Note, the last 3 digits of the LDS FHL film # match those of the NARA reel #.
So guess a page, look it up, pick a name on that image, look it up on the LDS site and adjust your guess of the page/image # (the bit after the /n in the URL).

I've managed to find Robert Jackson on the Family Search 1900/1910 census in Port Vue, Allegheny, Pennsylvania - with wife Cetie on 1900 but Calle B in 1910. Says he emigrated 1889, and they had been married 5 years, but I can't find a marriage. She was born Pennsylvania according to the census.

On the 1900 census Robert's father John was with him, a widow, it says he emigrated 1888 and he is a widow. John was not with the family 1910.

Trying to find the death of John Jackson's wife Martha (nee Grisdale), she was born Kendal, Westmorland 1845. Also the death for John, he was born Milnthorpe, Westmorland 1844.

Don't think Martha died in UK, think she may have gone to US with John and then died there.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Added: I've just found Celia B Jackson still in the area 1920, but a widow. Her father in law John Jackson is with the family, but this is from Family Search so no other details on there.

There is an Ancestral file and several Pedigree Resource Files on Family Search which lists Samuel born in the Dixies and may help you

according to google a tide waiter was a customs officer

hard to imagine what a customs officer did in Arnside - make sure they did not smuggle copper out from Coniston???

Hi mgnv, guess you know the area too! Other parts of my ancestry moved between Beetham/Arnside and the Lindale/Cartmel area by walking the sands - one of them going back to the late 18th century was a "Tide Waiter" much respected of Arnside according to his gravestone. Though I'm not exactly sure what that was.

You can still walk the sands (or like you say more like the muds) now, but they recommend you only do it with a guide.

Your brother was very lucky to survive the tides, many (including rather a lot of cockle-pickers not so long ago) have not been so lucky. My own great-uncle drown on the crossing in the 1920s.

It's abt 40 m by road from Lancaster to Dalton, and another 3m to Barrow. However, 3m out of Lancaster you can take to the sands at Hest Bank and a 9m hike over the sands takes you to Kent Pt, just S of Grange-over-Sands, saving abt 12m. From there, you can head W another 5m to Ulverstone, the last half of this leg again over the sands across the Leven Estuary, saving another 5 m. Obviously, this needs tidal cooperation and careful timing, but there's no great elevation change and I would say the trip is feasible.

Trips across the sands are not risk free. Not that it's terribly relevant, but when my brother was a student at Lancaster, he and a fellow student were out measuring something or other they got trapped by the tide on a bar over half a mile offshore. Fortunately (since it was pre-cell-phone days) they were seen by a fisherman who rowed out to rescue them - the water was mid-thigh by the time they were picked up.

NB Over the sands is a bit of a misnomer, since it's really nearly all mud.

That looks very promising, there's a John Jackson birth reg Kendal, which covered Milnthorpe, in 1844, and the John I'm looking at has an oldest daughter called Sarah - could be after his mother - I could be jumping to conclusions though!

Sandside is in the right area near Storth Milnthorpe. I'll phone my son later and see if I can use his name/credit card to get another free trial.

Thanks for this lead, I'll check out the area when I can next get some time at the records office, and try checking for Samuel on the GR trees.

added: Have just found a tree on GR with Samuel Jackson (born the Dixies) & Sarah Brennan, so sent a message to the owner to see if they can help.

There is a tree on Ancestry that lists this John Jackson as the son of Samuel Jackson and Sarah Brennan as below in 1851 - Samuel is listed as born on 11 March 1817 in The Dixis Sandside Westmorland

yes this is the right family which I couldn't read in1871. This could be a better lead on John's birth, on 1881 census it is down as Millington Lancashire - but I can't find anywhere called Millington in Lancs. I'll check the Milnthorpe area for a birth, it's quite close to Kendal where they were married.

The Dunn Hurley Tree on Ancestry does list James Henry Hurley's wife Emma Jackson as the daughter of John Jackson 1843 and Martha with the same census image given as your John and Martha in 1881

This looks like the family you found difficulty with reading on GR

I didn't realise they let you have free access, but no don't have easy access apart from when I take time off work. The local studies library doesn't open Saturdays nowadays.

Very doubtful, Emma Jackson was married by then, you've found her 1900/1910 as Emma Hurley in Pennsylvania with loads of children.

I may be completely wrong about them going to America, but going by what my grandmother said & not finding anything on them after 1887 it looked the most likely.

Trouble is finding a Jackson in passenger records isn't easy, which is why I thought their daughter Emma and her husband might have given a lead on the parents.

Thanks for keeping on trying Ginny, I really must think about getting an Ancestry sub when my GR sub runs out, can't really afford both!

Thanks Ann, that would probably rule out the family Ginny found.

I've been trying to register for the Ancestry free trial, but as I've already had one a year or so ago it won't let me. There are a couple of trees on there with Emma Jackson/James Henry Hurley's children on them. If anyone has a sub and a few minutes to spare could you check if the trees have anything about Emma's parents please?

edit: should have said the children Ginny found on the 1910 census in Pennsylvania.
