Thanks for trying Ginny, but I don't think its them. Martha was born Kendal, Westmorland and their daughter Margaret was born in 1870 Barrow in Furness, Lancs. So doubtful they would have had a second child called Margaret.

The one child that could tie up is Lizzie, as my John/Martha had a daughter Mary Elizabeth born 1883 Barrow, but I haven't come across a Leonard or Charles

Flip Report 16 Jul 2011 09:59

John Jackson (c1843 Lancashire) and his wife Martha (1845 Kendal maiden name Grisdale) were Emma's parents. They are last on a census in Barrow in Furness 1881, and I can place them in Barrow as late as 1887 when one of their other children died.

They were my gg-grandparents - one of their children Margaret stayed in Barrow she was my g-grandmother.

I think they may have also gone to America around the same time as Emma.

Gee Report 16 Jul 2011 09:53

Who are John and Martha....if they are the children on the census above, they born in the US

Flip

Flip Report 16 Jul 2011 09:43

Hi Ginny that's Emma, emigration date ties in and explains why I can't find them in England census. So my memory of Lizzie saying her Jacksons went to America are probably right, though I've no confirmation on John & Martha going.

Many thanks

Update:
Marriage certificate for Margaret Jackson/Thomas Thompson 1/4/1896 St Marks, Barrow shows her father as John Jackson, labourer. Witnesses Denis Dumphey (that name again) and Agnes Brown. She was living 7 Lincoln St. Barrow.

So it looks like we were looking at the right family John Jackson/Martha Grisdale. Their only surviving children (in 1887) would have been Sarah A (c1866 Millington), Emma (1867 Barrow), Robert (1873 Barrow) and Mary Elizabeth (1883 Barrow) & Margaret who I know stayed in Barrow.

Also found a marriage for Margaret's sister Emma 31/10/1887 St James Barrow to James Henry Hurley. Can't locate either of them after this, and there doesn't appear to be any children born to them locally.

Not sure whether all but Margaret emigrated, they all seem to disappear.

Thanks Ann, I didn't know about this site until a couple of weeks ago, you're right it's really good for researching this area. According to the local records office they have only recently completed transcribing the records.

I've got the children's details from there, and at least 5 of them died as infants - it is Margaret born 1870 that I think is my g-grandmother, but as it's a fairly common name I'm going to try to confirm if this is her through her marriage certificate.

I don't know if you have seen this site Flip - v useful for Barrow area

cumbriabmd.org.uk

it shows 9 Jackson children with mmn = Grisdale

plus Robert 1873 with mmn transcribed as Grisdell

There are 2 other Roberts no mmn shown

Flip Report 10 Jul 2011 12:44

I'm not 100% that this is the right family, so rather than waste someones time searching I though I'd wait till the marriage record for Margaret & Thomas arrives and post up the details.

Thanks K, for all the help so far.

K Report 10 Jul 2011 12:03

Sorry - you are right she died at the same time as their daughter Maria Miriam.

I wonder if it worth asking for a look up of the USA or Canadian census i don't have access

There is a John Jackson, Martha Jackson and Robert Jackson of the right ages born in England in 1910 of the right age Providence, Rhode Island.

Flip

Flip Report 10 Jul 2011 10:26

Had a better look at the family, looks like John Jackson married Martha Grisdale in Kendal 1866, and by 1871 were in Barrow (Crellin St, but original image on here is illegible). Can last place them in Barrow in 1887, they had daughter Eleanor in 1886, she died in 1887.

At the back of my mind I remember Lizzie saying some of her Jackson family emigrated to America, so that could be why we can't find them in 1891/1901.

Flip

Flip Report 10 Jul 2011 09:35

Not sure, I think their daughter Martha died in 1882. Strange the whole family seem to disappear though.

K

K Report 10 Jul 2011 09:06

Agree that John and Martha do appear to be the most obvious parents. They all seem to disappear post 1881 but wonder whether this is the youngest daughter Martha

Thanks Ann & K,

Guess Margaret wasn't at Castle St, it was just a thought as I can't find her on 1891 census. Think I may have her 1881 in Barrow, with father John & mother Martha, but will need to check the marriage cert to be sure of her father's name. Can't find other members of this family in 1891 either, but not much point checking until I get the cert.

The christening shows them still being in Preston for a while after the birth, guess they moved back to Barrow sometime between 1893 & the marriage in 1896.

K

K Report 10 Jul 2011 07:20

Hi Flip

Glad to hear you have found the correct birth. In 1891 this family appear to be living at both 15 and 16 Castle Street when you look at the image which doesn't help. Maybe her marriage cert would be the best way forward.

Kay

Hi again

Birth certificate finally arrived, it is the right one - Mary Elizabeth Jackson born 9/7/1892 at 15 Castle Street Preston. Mother Margaret Jackson a domestic servant but no father named. Birth was registered by the mother on 4/9/1892.

Looks like we had the right Mary E on the 1901 census with Thomas & Margaret Thompson, but chances are Thomas is not her father.

Many thanks for all the help

You may be right, I found a death in Barrow for Thomas Dumphey, but didn't spot this marriage.

I'm away all week, but will post up what the birth cert gives when it arrives.

Thanks for the help so far.

K Report 3 Jul 2011 14:35

There is a tree on Ancestry that gives Maria Pearce listed as the niece of Mary Dumphy in 1911 - with the maiden name Clement with parents Thomas Clement and Rebecca Hill

I wonder if this was the marriage - I wonder if Mary Dumphey was a distant relative and the census enumerator just mistook her for a mother in law

Surname First name(s) District Vol Page
Marriages Dec 1884 (>99%)
