I'd missed that Derek! Looks like he might have had an accident at work ....

There are quite a few passages for various Mary Gilchrists to Canada and also to US (many people went to US and then crossed over to Canada) - will sift through.

However, I've run out of time for tonight so if anyone else sees a likely passage for Mary Jane Gilchrist to Canada - feel free!

Marie..you're a gem...thanks for the death info....did you notice at the top//"Hospital for the Insane"...that must have been where he was a Guard..rather than himslef being insane!! phew!! and i agree with you 1901 findings for Mary Jane Slingsby

Can't thank you all enough.

Derek.

Here's the two separate marriages:

Slingsby Thomas Alfred Sculcoates 9d 404

Surname First name(s) District Vol Page

MarieCeleste Report 12 Dec 2011 20:48

I do believe it was the other Mary Jane Blashill who married Mr Slingsby - here she is with him in 1901:

SLINGSBY, Thos Alfd Head Married M 38 1863 Journeyman Joiner Hull Yorkshire
SLINGSBY, Mary Jane Wife Married F 33 1868 Hull Yorkshire
SLINGSBY, Thos James Son Single M 8 1893 Hull Yorkshire
SLINGSBY, Geo Alfd Son Single M 4 1897 Hull Yorkshire
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Registration District: Sculcoates
Civil Parish: Sculcoates

Address: 15, Alma Street, Sculcoates, Kingston Upon Hull County: Yorkshire (East riding)

As you know, "your" Mary Jane was at that time married to William Gilchrist.

I think you're in danger of jumping to conclusions and going down the wrong path! :-)

Derek, you've obviously not read the death record I posted (and sent to you!)

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 12 Dec 2011 20:40

Have sent the death record to Derek anyways.

Mary Jane must have followed later, although I'm not seeing an obvious record.

Derek Report 12 Dec 2011 20:40

Robin and Margee..brilliant support!! thank you very much indeed.....I didn't think that Mary Jane went with him....because it looks like she re-married by 1911..to a guy called Slingsby.......Her parents were George and Catherine..age and origin is right...so is the father's name....But what could have happened between 1899 and 1904???????

All complicated by the fact that there is another Mary Jane Blashill born Hull with parents george and Sarah..but I think i'll go with you guys in believeing that my relation William Gilchrist left his wife behind for whatever reason.

A Divorce by Mary J of William Gilchrist between 1904 and 1911..would be fun...any takers???

Many many thanks for the Canada information.....I can confirm from Family records that William died in Ontario in 1920......I believe that Mary J went on till 1951

Derek.

i just looked at the m on william written on the document and it looks nearly the same as the m in single/married section so i should think as Margee states his still married.

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 12 Dec 2011 20:11

This looks to be William's death and the informant is his wife Mary Jane:

Ontario, Canada, Deaths, 1869-1938 and Deaths Overseas, 1939-1947

Name: William Gilchrist
Death Date: 29 May 1920
Death County or District: Simcoe
Age: 59
Gender: Male
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1861
Birth Location: Hall, England

He'd arrived in Canada 1904. Was born in Hull 13 Jan 1861, father's name was John.

Death was caused by injury following accident/congestion of the brain.

At the time of death he was a guard at Ont hospital but had previously been a clerk in an office.

Derek - if you want the image just say and I'll attach it to a pm.

I also think it's an "m" if you compare it with the "m" in Durham further down the page.

i said i think. its not carved in stone i was finding it hard to see even on 200% it could well be an m for married but could also be a w for widow its a shame we can not put the doc on here.

In any case i couldnt find a good matching death for her.

I disagree with Robin, I think on the passenger list it shows M for married. Son's name is spelled Rowland. He's aged 15. They're heading to Toronto.

I think on the passenger document it has a W on the married or single section of the form which i would think means widow.

so it looks like Mary has past away.
