PatinCyprus Report 14 Jan 2012 14:07

Wonder if anyone can help me as I have hit a brick wall.

The story starts with my late mother in law. Her mother Annie Goldsmith married Francis 1920. Edith Annie (mother in law) born 1920. Francis is much older than Annie and dies at 44/45 in1922. Edith knew little about her father other than he was tall and from a Dutch family - not even sure where he was born.

Annie married again in 1924 to a widower Frederick Gardner who had a son and daughter from his 1st marriage. A daughter Doris was born to the new marriage. Much later Annie is again widowed and married in 1950s not long before her death.

When I started doing my tree I also tried to put together my husband's direct family. At the time I only had up to 1901 on the census and couldn't find any van den or just plain Driessches on the census although there are b d m for them. Seemed to fight shy of the census.

Recently tried again with 1911 census, to our surprise Francis is there with his 1st wife and children. His wife was Marie Stahler (died 1917) and I have found 6 children to the marriage. The last one Stanley born 1913 the mother's mn as Stuhler? spelling error? All these children under van den Driessche - Edith under only Driessche although she did say her father was a van den Driessche. Francis born London in 1877.

Edith never once mentioned the possibility of siblings or a previous marriage and we believe if Annie knew she did not tell Edith.

I could get a birth and marriage certificate for Francis but due to lack of census information I couldn't put him with siblings.

The areas of St George's in the East and Poplar seem to be the family areas in London.

I have tried to contact some people related to a Stanley C Driessche born 1915 m m n Steel to see if there is a link other than the name Stanley. Unfortunately the only one to open her mail has not replied.

Now where do I go?

Thanks

Pat

1911 census says 5 children born alive, 4 still living, 1 died.
Antonia, Francis, Caroline and John Francis are there. Could the missing one be Marie Caroline b 1905 Mile End Old Town and died Whitechapel 1905. This would then make 7 children born, with Edward and Stanley after the census.

Thanks Suart but without sending for birth cert. am unable to verify it. There were other van den Driessches out there. Just tracked Francis's sister, her marriage and 3 children in Mile End. She married in 1912 so easier to confirm births with mother's maiden name.

You probably have this. Just other ways that the surname is (or isn't) shown. The original has ditto for the children's surname and so misses out the Vandan of Antonia, presumed as a middle name I suppose

Think you're right Stuart, thanks. Just found another mystery about Johanna, Francis's sister. Marries Otto Pingel, has 2 Pingel children a third in 1918 is a Pingel Holmes, Otto jnr and Johanna die as Pingel Holmes and both daughters marry one as Pingel Holmes the other who was born Kathleen I Pingel Holmes marries as Kathleen I P Holmes. Can't see 2nd marriage for Johanna and no death for Otto snr. Was he German and went home in WW1? If he went, who is Kathleen's father, who was this Holmes. Oh for the 1921 census!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Could well be as Francis had sons Francis John and one John Francis. John F would be about 16 at this time and may have been looked after by his gran after his mother's death. Francis snr died in 1922 and I think the children of his 1st family were elsewhere before his 2nd marriage.

Thanks for this it all helps

Thank you for that information. After weeks of trying to find a new way in looks like we're back at least 1 generation, maybe 2 with this last bit, and I can come forward with Johanna's children.

Thanks again
