Hi Stuart. Thank you so much!!!!! I have spent an age on this lady. She was my husbands paternal grandmother. I will have to go to Scotlands people and make enquiries on how to get a certificate.
Thank you doesn't seem quite enough for the time that you have saved me

Dawn.

Thank you all for your suggestions. Today I received the death certificate for the entry in 1955. Definitely not her! Where to go now??? Maybe Scotland? She wasn't born there but her husband was, maybe she is in their records. Other than that I will go down the line of Newcastle records and see if theyy can help. Will update as soon as I can.

Hope it turns out to be the right one for you Dawn. There is always the chance of human error when records are transcribed - we've all seen the mistakes made on census record transcriptions!!

Good luck.

Hi Everyone
Just a quick update. The GRO cannot find the 1935 death certificate either! They are now investigating the possibility of the 1955 entry being mine. They would not even look at the idea that it may have been transcribed incorrectly, but it has now been ordered (and paid for!) so they will now look at it. Will post as soon as I hear anything.

So that isn't any help at all as it would appear that neither of her half sisters married.

rootgatherer

rootgatherer Report 18 May 2012 16:15

Someone must have been responsible for having her name put on the headstone. Given that she had no siblings only half siblings it may be worth trying to work forward from them.

It may be a bit of a long shot but could be worth a try. My Gran used to tell me about her half sister who was actaully married before my Gran was born. My Gran was one of ten children from her father's second marriage but was probably closer to her half sister than any of her full brothers and sisters.

If I was you I would ring the GRO in Southport so that you can speak to someone. Say you want to order the death certificate that is on the index as 1955 but that you think the year might actually be 1935 and so may have been mistranscribed from the original entry.

It is too much of a coincidence that the 1955 death is the right name, in the right place in the right quarter of the year and the age at death is 58 rather than 38. I think someone has just mistaken a 3 for a 5 in both cases.

Thank you for your reply,Gwyn. All I know is what you see. My father in law knew that his mum died young and that no Crawford family would take them in, so thay were in a childrens home somewhere on the Medway, and were fostered out at different times (he had a brother) to families in that area. The Newcastle cemeteries people could give me no more information. I do not know where she lived at the time of her death but rumour had it that she died of influenza (she was a nurse) . I have not tried the registrar nearest to the burial ground in Jesmond. I will try that. Edith was living in the medway area when her husband died.

Gwyn in Kent Report 16 May 2012 20:46

Where was Edith living when her husband died...was it the Medway area?

Could she have remarried, then reverted to her 1st married name at burial?

Have you checked with the registrar closest to the burial ground, incase the information never made it into the GRO master index.?

Was there no home address on the burial record.? This might give a different registration ditrict.

As the children's father had Navy connections, could they have been schooled at one of the Royal Navy homes / colleges?

Hi folks, sorry it's taken me so long, but here goes:
Edith maud Crawford was buried on 5th january 1935 aged 38 according to newcastle cemeteries division so the information on the headstone is correct. And according to them the majority of people were buried within 7 days of death so January 2nd would be correct!
And I am still not able to find a certificate to confirm this, what with wildcat searches and all the possibilities of spelling mistakes and her maiden name and double barrelling of it. No joy.
Thank you all for your help, and I will carry on with the search!

Her husband was a Navy man and died at the Royal Haslar hospital in Hampshire, where he was also buried. He died 17 Sept 1927 aged just 40. I will update as soon as I have spoken to Newcastle council. Thank you x

Dawn please update on here if you have any luck when you ring the council.
I wonder why she wasn't buried with her husband if he died first

Dawn

Dawn Report 4 Mar 2012 23:06

The headstone does say Crawford and her father died first.

Dawn

Dawn Report 4 Mar 2012 23:04

Thank you all for your replies, sorry I have only just seen them, for some reason the "watch this" is not working - or maybe my computer is playing up. I will try to ring Newcastle Council and see if they have any record. I know that the Crawford sie of the family would not take the children in when she died. Maybe I am wrong and she did leave her children when she couldnt cope. I will probably never know as my in laws died a good few years ago and I know my father in law so wanted to find his mothers grave. I thank you all for your time and effort.

Jan, 2 trees on ancestry have her year of birth as 1896 so I would agree that the birth you have given is correct. Also the 1955 death would also seem appropriate.

From the trees her husband died in 1927. Perhaps she left home because she just couldn't cope with two young children on her own?

Her mother had died in 1902 and Edith seems to be the only child from her father's first marriage althoug he had a daughter (b. 1907) from his second. Doesn't look as though Edith had an extended family to help with her young children.
