Oh darn. What a shame that Emma's name is so common.

I do wonder if the boys (James and Samuel) were registered under Clark?

Oh, well done Maureen!

Do you think it looks as if Emma wasn't the mother of Samuel and James?
Emma has no trouble in remembering her age and place of birth, nor the age and place of birth of her daughter.

On the other hand, Samuel, James and their father Samuel are all over the place. I think Emma would have been more consistant.

I really don't think Samuel and Emma ever got married. By 1891 Emma had left Samuel and was living with George Cook. I don't think she married him either.

Emma was still alive in 1890, so had she been married to Samuel, he wouldn't have been free to marry Harriet.

When Emma left she took only Eleanor with her. I have a feeling she wasn't James or Samuel's mother.

Don't know if this will lead to anything, but on the freebmd birth registrations
for Guisborough -

James Gunn Clay reg. jul-sep 1871 and

Samuel Clay reg.ape-jun 1875

Oh - pity. I don't think the above are connected as there's also a Joseph Gunn Clay b.1864 and an Isaac Gunn Clay b.1869.
