When i check the 1871 census i find thomas's profession is a miner when he was in baxenden. So could be that that marriage is correct. But he was born in marsden from most of the census. So not sure why he would be getting married in burnley. I am unable to find him on the 1861 census, and to be honest, not certain i am tracking the correct thomas clegg until i get the marriage certificate of thomas and alice astin for 1885 which is my next step. From that i will hopefully have his dads name which would be a great help. If it is down as thomas, then i will consider that marriage as a good chance of being the one. And i now find that on most of census it does seem that thomas , if its correct thomas, was born around 1837. :-)

Hi Mike, no thomas wasnt a collier ever i dont think. more like a labourer or pavior etc . I think too that its more likely to be marsden where he was born and first married, as i think it says on the census he was born in marsden. So more likely to be st james briercliffe or st johns nelson for marriage. or st peters at a push , in burnley. Apart from that, think he was born more around 1840, 1845 ishg from most of the census. Cant remember what his age was on the 1871 census in baxenden. And ive just realised, the alice he was married to then must have been the first alice, wife number one, as he didnt marry alice number two until 1885 . I keep confusing them. :-)

thanks mike. think richard died in 1883. not sure about james yates as unsure of his age and found two choices between 1869 and 1878 for his death. has she any children living with her as i am wondering why she left it so late in 1886 to have a child. i think that the alice thomas clegg was living with in 1871 in baxenden was his first wife but i am not sure of her maiden name?

Wonder why she never added Yates as one of her previous names on children's birth certs

Mike * Report 10 Jul 2012 23:23

Sometimes the fact that the marriage is recorded in 2 names is that the bride's "father" has a different name.
So if her mother re-married to a Yates, Alice may have named him on the certificate as her father

Discovered that alice astin first married james yates, then richard watson, then finally thomas clegg in 1885. So solved the mystery thanks to you all. I forgot to mention that alice and thomas were living in 1871 in baxenden, near accrington. Has anyone got the details for that census?
thanks

have noticed a marriage between alice astin and richard watson in 1878, but she is also known as alice yates, so goodness knows how that fits in if that is indeed her. ? This woman is very confusing . !! Now wondering if richard watson is the brother of thomas watson, esther's second husband? And confused as to the yates surname. Unless yates is the maiden name of maria , george's wife?

Shirley

Shirley Report 10 Jul 2012 22:19

Yes mike, sorry, thts what i meant. Alice clegg formerly walton nee astin . But thats obviously meant to be watson and was mistranscribed. But i am still struggling as to why she was ever a watson unless she married one, maybe a brother of her sisters husband thomas?? but i havent found a marriage yet.

Shirley

Shirley Report 10 Jul 2012 22:12

Thanks margee, its looking good. But just wondering why then alice was watson on her marriage certificate. Did she maybe marry a watson also, as she was defiantely an alice watson/walton when she married thomas clegg. And on ellen's birth certificate. it said alice walton formerly astin.

Surely it should say Alice CLEGG, previously walton, formerly Astin.
