thanks Mel

I have all the details of Robert from his marriage to his death but am having difficulty identifying his parents as there are several possibles

I was hoping that finding John law's wife would help

believe it or not there are several Sutcliffe Sutcliffe/Greenwood/Law/Mitchel names in Todmorden

it seems to have been common practice - there are also Greenwood Greenwoods etc

Robert Sutcliff died 26th May 1862 as I put in the earlier posting of the probate.

The only ones I seem to find are Worsted Weavers! But this looks a bit interesting as this one has a son called Sutcliff.

thanks reggie

I had not done any research on this family for a while but I had a feeling I had looked for them a few years ago and not found them

when I get home I will check when the will was made to see if it was before 1861 as in the will itself they are described as in Littleborough

thanks Gins

that one could be worth loking at

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 13 Jul 2012 11:23

The Probate record is very clear that both Law and Mitchell were resident in Littleborough at the time..........but I'm blowed if I can see either of them in 1861

thanks Reggie

I wondered about that one but the area of Wardle put me off as there is another Sutcliffe family in Wardle and I think my Sutcliffes were more from the Yorkshire side of Todmorden, Langfield and Heptonstall

It is proving difficult to identify the right family which is why I was trying to find John Law's wife, but again there are a few Law families

I suppose the only importance of the date is whether John was in Littleborough in 1851 as well.

He was certainly in Littleborough in June 1862 from the probate record which I do have here.

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 13 Jul 2012 11:11

As he was an executor , the date the Will was written isn't important

lancashireAnn

lancashireAnn Report 13 Jul 2012 11:03

I am not at home at the momemnt so do not have the actual will to hand - just the transcription which for some reason I had only done the will itself.

It was for a robert sutcliffe who died in 1862 in Todmorden.

Both John Law and the other executor, Abraham Mitchel were desribed as brothers in law, both innkeepers of Littleborough (not sure whether that would have been classed as Lancashire or Yorkshire at the time). As Robert wife was a mary Mitchel, Abraham was presumably Mary's brother and John was married to Robert's sister

For anyone not sure.........Littleborough is Rochdale area

When was the Will drawn up?

What was the name of the deceased?

lancashireAnn Report 13 Jul 2012 10:49

Please can anybody find a John Law, innkeeper in Littleborough in the 1861 census

I have no more details about him, just trying to link him to one of my families as he was described in a will as 'brother in law' to someone who was born c1801

I would guess he was born late 1700's or early 1800's
