Julia, you're very welcome.

What direction are you wanting to go with this? Are any of these your direct relatives?

If you want any more info I'm happy to poke around but don't want to bombard you with info that isn't really relevant.

Looks like Alice Maud married as Palfrey - borne out by quite a well sourced tree on Ancestry (although they don't seem to have twigged on to her birth)

England & Wales, Marriage Index: 1916-2005
Name: Alice M Palfrey
Spouse : William J M Rees
Date of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep 1927
Registration district: Cardiff
Inferred County: Glamorgan

Hi MarieCeleste,
Think I will stick to facts!
Julia.

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 18 Jul 2012 18:55

I think this is the birth of the youngest daughter on the 1911:

Surname First name(s) District Vol Page
Births Dec 1910
PEARD Sarah A Cardiff 11a 447

and this is quite likely the elder:

Surname First name(s) District Vol Page
Births Jun 1908
Peard Alice Maud Cardiff 11a 493

Julia - that is terrible!!

You asked in your opening post if Richard Palfrey who married Edith May Hardaker was the son of Philip. I think this is Philip's step-son in 1911:

PALFREY, Richard Head Married M 24 1887 Railway Porter Weston Bristol
PALFREY, Daisy Wife Married 4 years F 25 1886 Ts Southampton
PALFREY, Alice Daughter F 2 1909 Glamorgan Cardiff
PALFREY, Sarah Ann Daughter F 0 (5 MONTHS) 1911 Glamorgan Cardiff

Reference: RG14PN32149 RG78PN1847 RD588 SD4 ED17 SN382
Registration District: Cardiff
Sub District: West Cardiff
Enumeration District: 17
Parish: Cardiff

Address: 6 Lincoln ST County: Glamorganshire

I'm not seeing an obvious marriage ....

Could this be "Maggie's" birth registration???

Births Mar 1901 (>99%)

Palfrey Margaret Pretoria Cardiff 11a 397

If you want my "gut" feeling ............

.......... Sarah left John Peard after 1891 and before 1895 when Lil(l)y was born in Cardiff.

She and Phil(l)ip moved to Cardiff together after she had left John..

I think you will find that the children born after about 1894 are Phil(l)ip Palfrey's

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 18 Jul 2012 05:35

?????? Phillip's death

Deaths Dec 1923 (>99%)

PALFREY Phillip 71 Cardiff 11a 467

and Sarah's?????

Deaths Mar 1919 (>99%)

Palfrey Sarah A 51 Cardiff 11a 680

If I was doing the family tree, I would classify Richard P and his siblings as step-children of Phil(l)ip Palfrey

MC ..............

................... thank you!

Julia ....................

Any children that were Sarah and John Peard's seem to have used hteir "step-father's" name after Philip and Sarah began living together.

There would have been no official adoption as legal adoptions did not exist before mid-1927.

Stepchildren vary in whether they kept their "own" name or used "step-father's" name .......... and some switched back and forth, almost at will!

In this case ................. Richard Philip Palfrey is indeed a Palfrey only in name as he is Sarah's son by a previous marriage. It looks as though he was comfortable enough with the name to have kept the name into later life.

Hi Sylvia and MarieCeleste,
The most likely death I can find is John Peard died 1901 Bristol age
58 years.

Reagrds
Julia.

Julia Report 17 Jul 2012 23:20

Hi Sylvia,
Thank you, I will look for the death of John Peard.
So Richard P Palfrey may be Palfrey in name only,
I suppose only Sarah would have the answer to that one.
The mystery deepens!
Regards
Julia.
