I'm sure that must be her... I think it must have been Henry she was engaged to, he would have been 21 in 1914 whereas Walter would only have been 15. (Henry was killed in 1915 and Walter in 1917). Hilda would have been 18.

Mum seems to remember that Hilda met the family through her fiancé and if they did meet abroad, it's more likely that she was a nurse and met Henry in France in 1914 / 1915 before he was killed. She may even have nursed him (or is that me giving it a romantic twist?!)

The only other option is that she was in the Women Army Auxiliary... both her and Walter could have been in France in 1917, although Walter was only 18 when he was killed in France in August 1917. This seems less likely.

Such a sad waste of life in the war :o(

I've found a tree with Hilda in, and have contacted them to see if there's any more information

Henry Ernest's army papers are in the WW1 records.

This birth would tie in with the Hilda Carr who died in 1977, assuming she never married

The Women's Army Auxiliary Corps

July 7th, 1917, is the date considered to be the official start of the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps.

So if Hilda was in the Army it couldn't have been before 1917.

EDIT: she could have been a nurse

The First Aid Nursing Yeomanry went to Belgium in 1914. Later on they went to France.

It could actually.... I've put a call into my Aunt who may have a better memory.

I've had a look at that one and it would make her 19 when Henry Skevington was killed (he was 23) or 19 when Walter Skevington was killed (he was 18).
My Mum seems to think they could have met abroad as Hilda was in the army (I don't have any records). We also don't know which Skevington she could have been engaged to!

It would also mean I was 11 when she died rather than 6 which is probably more accurate.

There's one in 1977 reg'd in Chesterfield - could that also be her?

There's only one Hilda Carr's death registered in Derbyshire between 1966 and 1976.. I should think it's her. It has her DOB as 5/9/1892

No I don't ... I can remember her, although not well, so I would guess between 1966 and 1976?

If Robert Carr died in 1960, then it's probably not my Hilda Carr as she was living with my Great Grandma (Lily Skevington) from about 1953 I think. Unless of course she left him?!

Ah, post's crossed! That's probably not the right one then. I do know she had a nephew called Donald born around 1935.

By the way... the updated photo shows Lily Rudge (nee Skevington), Jessie Brooks (nee Rudge) and my Mum (Jean Blockley - nee Brooks) and me in about 1965/1966!

If it is the right Hilda, she could have been engaged to the oldest boy and then met Robert and decided to marry him.

I've now found Hilda Carr... I'm not certain it's the right one but I'll contact the matching tree owners to see if they can confirm

I'm not sure that this Hilda Carr is the one you want. Her husband, Robert Cowley Carr, died in 1960 and I think he outlived Hilda as his estate went to Annie May (Helstrip) and George Edwin Carr.

I haven't emailed the local library re John Rudge's death, but I did go in a while ago and couldn't find anything in the local paper back then. I may be better asking one of the librarian's though as I'm sure they'd be better at it than I am!

I've also just rung my Mum who is now searching for Jessie Rudge's birth certificate! She's not convinced she has it but it's worth checking first...
She's also confirmed which church Jessie would have been baptised at (St Barnabas, New Whittington) so I can check that out :)

That matches the information I have on the brother, there's also another brother (Walter) who was killed in 1917 I think. It does mean there's not much time for Hilda to be engaged to either of them before they were killed though? Mum has just re-iterated the belief that Hilda was engaged to one of Lily's brothers.
Wow, just re-read the information on that and it gives a grave reference. I didn't know that... that's great information!

I searched for Hilda carr, residence Derbyshire and got 2 hits for 1911. The one i posted has only been married 2 years so won't be Carr in 1901 (she's Hancock)
