I have discovered with the help of the community board that my wifes paternal grandmother died in 1906 in the Manorhamilton Workhouse Co. Leitrim. previuos attempts to locate records were not successful. Does any one have any advice on how or where I could look to find details of the reason this lady was in a workhouse at only 28 years old and was a tenant farmers wife. (Census record 1911 house number 5 Carrickrevagh refers). Allan

There is no death showing on the Familysearch indexes to match the information that you have given (unless Regan was her maiden surname?). Only these
name: Anne Regan registration district: Manorhamilton event type: DEATHS registration quarter and year: Oct - Dec 1906 estimated birth year: 1816 age (at death): 90 volume number: 2 page number: 159 digital folder number: 4201707
name: Annie Regan registration district: Manorhamilton event type: DEATHS registration quarter and year: Oct - Dec 1911 estimated birth year: 1886 age (at death): 25 volume number: 2 page number: 135 digital folder number: 4201709
name: Anne Regan registration district: Manorhamilton event type: DEATHS registration quarter and year: Oct - Dec 1911 estimated birth year: 1829 age (at death): 82 volume number: 2 page number: 135 digital folder number: 4201709
If you have her death certificate, does it actually say that she died in the Workhouse? Or could it be that the district where she died was Manorhamilton?

Allan - who is at that address (house number 5 Carrickrevagh) in 1911?
It's not easy to try to search the Irish census by address.
I did find this by googling but can't see a connection:

these are all fantastic aids to the search for our family history. She died of "melancholia two years" and "paralysis six months" "certified". the informant was J Mckenna (I think) "occupier" Workhouse Manorhamilton on 28 November 1906. MarieCeleste, you are correct with the family names., Mary, James, and Maggie then emigrated to USA in the late 1920's. (oh I wish I could find their descendants!) Owen (9) was my wifes father, and here there was a complication which caused us much consternation, my wifes maiden is Scallon and not Scollan. a lesson in not believing the spellings which are being used! Peter thanks for the info about the hospital possibility. I thought the Workhouses were only for those destitute. Rootgatherer thanks for the website. i had not seen that one. Allan

All I have to do now is find the Scollans in USA. I do have James's application for residence. He was in New york at the time and was a carpet layer. Allan

Have deleted an earlier arrival I posted for Mary, which I now think is wrong. This is the correct one and matches her naturalisation:
New York Passenger Lists, 1820-1957 Name: Mary Scallan Arrival Date: 16 Jan 1926 Birth Year: abt 1909 Birth Location: Ireland Birth Location Other: glenfarne Age: 17 Gender: Female Ethnicity/Race/Nationality: Irish Port of Departure: Londonderry Port of Arrival: New York, New York Ship Name: Cameronia
She's a domestic and her next of kin (Bridget Scollan) and destination (Patrick Cullen) is the same as for James' 1927 arrival.

A domestic, had resided Manorhamilton. Also going to uncle Patrick Cullen. Gives her step-mother as Bridget KEANY, Carrickrevagh.
(It looks as though she'd been booked on a ship the year before but hadn't travelled)
