Find Ancestors

There has been a lot of reporting of Threads in the last couple of months that

have not been necessary, a few of them have been for posting the names

Ancestry ...Find my past and the like in Threads...I think some members believe it

is against Genes Rules to mention these names but that is false.

After deciding to check with Genes this is there response

If a member is unnecessarily reporting posts we do monitor this. Anyone who is deliberately disrupting the boards by reporting posts unnecessarily is only putting their own registration at risk.

We do not mind if Ancestry and Find My Past are mentioned on the boards, but we do not allow discussions about them or details of subscriptions or offers. We also ask you not to compare them to Genes Reunited.

We can use the word ANCESTRY and FIND MY PAST and any other site name

Thanks for posting this Sue, hopefully it will clarify things for that small minority who feel it is their purpose in life to trawl through the threads ensuring that "The Rules" are adhered to.

If I might just add my thoughts - on the very few occasions when I have reported posts (and it should always be a last resort, a pm to the poster is more constructive) then I have always posted on the thread saying that I have done so and the reason why.

It's far more helpful to point out to the poster what the transgression is and offer constructive advice as to how they can rectify it.

Personally, I believe that when a thread is reported it should state who has done so and the option they selected for the reason.

If you don't have the integrity and courage of your convictions, then don't report.

So far I have never reported a post but I have often been very near to it and always for the same reasons. I see no need for any member to be rude or condescending to other members, especially new and inexperienced members. Included in this are people who continually quote the T & C's and tell others in no uncertain terms what they can and cannot do. I am not surprised that membership is dropping. Some new members are put off ever posting again after comments made to them. I know this as fact after receiving pm's from people confirming this. Surely we all want the membership to stay up and for people to join in on the boards it all makes for more fun. We can't do much about the problems caused by GR and the new tree layout but we can be nice to each other and keep the boards going or am I just looking through rose tinted glasses. (Wanted to add a smiley face but my emotions aren't working.)

I have had lots of help with my research from the lovely people that assist on these boards and, I hope, that I have given a lot of help. Like a lot of others I love research, have many resources and subscriptions to help me and I have plenty of time that I want to fill. So why not help others who maybe can't afford the time or the money to do as much as they would like to do for themselves?

This post is not meant to cause any unpleasantness or upset, just saying what I feel.

How could your post cause unpleasantness or upset.

Like you I have had help with my research from many people who assist on these boards - several brick walls have tumbled.

Unfortunately, there will always be people who see things differently - some are even malicious in their intent.

I hope Genes Reunited can use commonsense when looking at any reporting and not remove the threads unless a genuine concern has been notified.

Try clicking on tools then compatibility view ..that should give you back your emoticons.

Thank you Susan, I can add smilies at the end of a post but not in the middle. Maybe it is because I am using my iPad as I think it works on the PC.

I agree with everything you say and think less reported threads would mean more people posting.

I have to agree with all the above, especially MCs comments.

I Agree with everthing said. Its not up to us to police these boards or inforce the T&G , that for GR to do, and is one of the reason why we pay a subscriptions.

No One has the right to come on these boards to flame anybody or to be rude to anyone

The more that these boards are used by people new and old, the more we all can all learn. Often reading a thread often give a clue to others how to solve there problems when researching

We are all here for the same reason to research our family history and to seek help, so please be polite to everyone and we will all get along fine , curtisy cost us nothing, but will make lasting freindships

It's good to have the GR policy in writing, and on the Boards!


I admit that I have RR'd a handful of posts over the years ............... for objectionable, racist or homophobic comments


never for posting in the wrong place, or for asking the wrong question, or for disagreeing with me in a discussion.


I think the reason for RR'ing should show on the post, and I think the poster should be told why a post has been removed, if that is the action taken


I'm not at all sure that the requester's name should be posted on the open thread, and possibly not even given to the poster ....................


there may well be people on here who may then start a vendetta against the requester.


GR should most definitely take action against those members who do multiple RR's without any reason ................ such as happened once again over last weekend.

The emoticons only appear at the end of a piece of typing.


You cannot type a piece, then go back and insert the emoticon at some point within that section.


If you do that, then you have to physically move the emoticon to where you want it ............ either by dragging, or by c&p'ing. C&p'ing is actually easiest to do.

Sue - it's just as easy to type in colon hyphen right-hand bracket which inserts (when submitted) smiley!

Good thread, good to know. I think it is still wise to point out to posters - especially new ones - when they "transgress" particularly when displaying email or telephone numbers :-)

Totally agree with you, I am not saying do not report the ones that do transgress

but do point it out to them first on the thread or by Pm itself what they are doing and why it is wrong and don't report the thread for silly things

Just going around reporting may make the reporter feel important for a while but really it serves no purpose.

A few of the posters have brought up about the way some helpers talk to new members when asking for help ...this has long been a pet hate of mine too.

My long running Thread Help us to Help you Three .... we ask that you be courteous and say please and thankyou when asking for help but I am sorry to say a few of the helpers are very rude at times ...it is so not necessary.

How can we expect good manners when we don;'t show it ourselves

I hope the reporters of threads are now better informed and new and old members can receive nice replies to their requests for help.

I was just about to report a thread, to protect the new members privacy. He had included his email and phone number

But, before I hit the RR button, I c/p his thread, without the contact details, so that his question(s) were still available to see

Anyway, someone beat me to RR button, but they hadnt c/p his request

Might be worth thinking about c/p before people hit the RR button, if its a question of privacy
