I know the passport application said he had dark skin but I think the transcription of negro on the 1920 is a mistake:
1920 United States Federal Census
Name: A T Lichtstern [A G Lichtstern] [A G Lichtstern] Age: 57 Birth Year: abt 1863 Birthplace: Germany Home in 1920: Deerfield, Lake, Illinois Race: Negro (Black) [White] Gender: Male Immigration Year: 1875 Relation to Head of House: Head Marital Status: Married Spouse's Name: Ritchie Lichtstern Father's Birthplace: Germany Mother's Birthplace: Germany Home owned: Own Able to read: Yes Able to Write: Yes Neighbors:

(The rest of the household are servants)
Looks like Marian is using her maiden surname.
The ages are hard to make out as the image is faint and has been written over.

I think this must have been the reason for the 1904 passport application - the ages are way out but it's just too much of a coincidence with the names.:
