Walter

Walter Report 15 Jul 2013 14:53

Yes it is an interesting problem that has occupied me for over 30 yrs, with "red herrings plentiful";Jewish names have the nasty habit of being anglicised and often pet names as opposed to real ones apply.
I have learnt to ignore transcripts and go back to original docs where possible and look at them closely. If you key in the Polish derivative of DAVIS some 300 or so names appear which could have the original,DAVIS being chosen as it sounds English and is loosly the son of David.
Possibly the name was changed after entering the Country, but I am amazed that the Mother and Father would not insist on a Birth Certificate which would give their Son automatic British Nationality as I can find no other Application for British Nationality for the other members of the Family.

The only thing I can suggest re Benjamin's birth is Synagogue records for Sunderland?

Walter is one of the trees on Ancestry yours ( it has photos of Isabella Jacob Levenston) because that has Benjamin Davis parents as David Davis and Ethel Humphreys ??

edit married under name of benjamin Davis....

Rambling Report 15 Jul 2013 12:20

right so the Barnett Davis marriages put on here are not the right ones.. or at least the red herring of 'Price' is not correct.....

This would be Jacob in 1901 Irish census ...perhaps interesting to note son 'Barney' wonder if his full name was Barnett?

Walter Report 15 Jul 2013 11:49

Thanks to everyone for your imput, the reason for the assumption that this is my family is that Grandfather ie BENJAMIN DAVIS always insisted that he was born in SUNDERLAND Co DURHAM on 1st March 1869 and on subsequent official Census docs this appears ;yet despite searches no registration of Birth is apparent.
Family correspondence states that an "Uncle" who had a Glazing firm in DUBLIN existed and was visited by family members, research shows that JACOB DAVIS moved to DUBLIN,Married in 1873 and had a family of 12 all born in DUBLIN,his business being GLAZIER and then General Contractor.
BARNETT (BENJAMIN) however disappears then surfaces in 1890 in DUBLIN to marry ISABELLA LEVENSTON noting on the Marriage Cert that his Father was dead at this time. His Mother "Anne" turns up on the 1911 Dublin Census and later in 1911 dies at her Son Jacob's House in Dublin named as "ESTHER DAVIS" age 75 Widow.
It seems highly probable that "BARNETT" and "ANNE" married in RUSSIAN POLAND c1853 and between them had 10 Children 4 of which survived (1871 Census) and 1911 Dublin Census )DAVIS being a "Taken Name"
Taking in all the above, there is no indication of what happened to the bulk of the family between 1871 and 1890,no sign of ANNA (HANNAH ?) or MOSES DAVIS and no burial place for "BARNETT Senior"

If they'd just arrived in England they may have put down whatever work they knew? or indeed the enumerator might have misheard 'Glaziers' for 'tailors'...it's not a leap with a Polish accent?

Also on the 1871 the place of birth has been transcribed as Ireland for all the adult.
Original clearly says Poland which at that time would be part of Russia.
There is a marriage in Birmingham 2nd quarter 1874 for Barnett Davis to Esther Myers.
Presumably Anne died, but looking for a death for the correct Anne Davis in Birmingham would be a bit of a problem.
Must admit I was a bit surprised that the occ was glazier. Would have expected them to be employed in the clothing industry.

ErikaH Report 14 Jul 2013 16:28

In 1871, the surname is recorded as Davies............with the 'e' being crossed out

Barnett snr and Jacob are Glaziers

............a far cry from the occ of the Jacob shown in 1881...........

The three children shown in 1881 are all recorded as being born in Manchester

The youngest's birth - at least - should, by law, have been registered....I can find no record

wisechild

wisechild Report 14 Jul 2013 16:09

Looks like they were a Jewish family, judging by the names & the link to Cheetham, Manchester which was a Jewish area.
Davis is probably an anglicised version of a Polish name.
The synagogue in Birmingham has been in existence for many years. Might be worth seeing if you can find anything in their records to point you in the right direction.

Was there a change of name(s) along the way?

Sorry-but if you see them in 1871 and then you don't see them again.......how do you know that they are "yours"?
