Pam - if you definitely think that it was Benjamin Exley's wife that gassed herself and you decide to buy the death certificate of Harriet Hannah Exley please come back to this thread and let us know what it says.

I, for one, would be interested to see if this death certificate confirms or refutes the theory that she gassed herself. If she did then perhaps she WAS the person known as "Dolly".

Names, dates and stories often get mixed up as the years go by.

Yes, Kath, me thinks I should drop the name Hanson from my family tree, and keep Williams, makes more sense, I think. - Hannah Williams b 1865 Ossett, spouse Samuel Hanson b 1859, child- Samuel Hanson b1890 Thorpe arch, Kitty Nunn b1894 Ossett, Samuel Hanson b 1896 Ossett, Emily Hanson b 1896 Ossett.

am going to drop Hanson from my grandmother name , Elizabeth Williams. :-) :-S :-S

Pam,

I don't think Elizabeth gave the children her maiden name as a middle name.

What you are seeing in the birth index is:-

Nunn (surname), Douglas (first name), Williams (mother's maiden name - which is always in the birth index after 1911). So your father is just Douglas Nunn as per this entry:-

Name: NUNN, Douglas
Registration district: Hemsworth
County: Yorkshire
Year of registration: 1919
Quarter of registration: Apr-May-Jun
Mother's maiden name: Williams
Volume no: 9C
Page no: 232

It's just that when you look at the entry on FreeBMD it is all put together on one line so at first glance it looks as it the mother's maiden name could be a middle name (but isn't).

HeyJudeB4Beatles Report 1 Sep 2013 13:49

There is not a birth to match "Dolly" in 1925. The only Nunn birth in 1925 of a girl in Hemsworth was Joyce mother's maiden name Young. It's already been "proved" Harriet Hannah was the first born and the living child of the two born to the marriage at the 1911 census.

So as suggested earlier the only way you are going to ascertain if Harriet Hannah could possibly be Dolly who "gassed herself" is to buy the death certificate - good luck!

Patchem, my father was Douglas Nunn b 1919, siblings Amos Nunn b 1910-1911, Joseph Hanson Nunn b 1911-1911, Arthur Williams Nunn b 1914-1915, Albert Nunn b1924, Kenneth Nunn b 1926, Dolly Nunn 1925 ??

My father Douglas, Albert, Amos, Dolly ? Harriet Hannah, Kenneth, parents Amos Arthur Nunn And Elizabeth Williams Hanson, do not know about the rest, Elizabeth Williams gave them her maiden name as their middle name for some reason ?.

Kath, I think you are right in saying that Elizabeth must have used the name Hanson when her mother married Samuel Hanson :-S

KathleenBell

KathleenBell Report 1 Sep 2013 12:02

I wonder if that birth in 1911 with the maiden name given as Hanson rather than Williams was registered by Amos instead of Elizabeth?

Perhaps because Elizabeth married using the name Elizabeth Williams Hanson, Amos didn't know that her maiden name was actually Williams. Just an idea really???

Elizabeth Williams Hanson seems to have started out as Elizabeth Williams and then taken on the Hanson name (probably when her mother married Samuel Hanson). Here she is in the 1891 census:-

1891 census transcription details for: Little Town End, Ossett With Gawthorpe, Ossett

National Archive Reference:
RG number: RG12
Piece: 3739
Folio: 58

Sub District: Ossett

Enum. District: 10
Ecclesiastical District: Holy Trinity
City/Municipal Borough: Ossett

Address: Little Town End, Ossett With Gawthorpe, Ossett
County: Yorkshire (West Riding)

Name Relation Condition Sex Age Birth Year Occupation , Disability Where Born

HANSON, Samuel Head Single M 32 1859 Scavenger

WILLIAMS, Hannah Visitor Single F 26 1865 Rag Sorter
Thorp Arch, Yorkshire
WILLIAMS, Elizabeth Daughter Single F 3 1888
Thorp Arch, Yorkshire<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
WILLIAMS, Samuel Son M 0 (10M) 1891
Thorp Arch, Yorkshire

Then this is the marriage of Samuel and Hannah:-

Name: HANSON, Samuel
Registration district: Dewsbury
County: Yorkshire
Year of registration: 1891
Quarter of registration: Apr-May-Jun
Spouse's last name: Not available before 1912
Volume no: 9B
Page no: 876

MarriageFinder: Samuel Hanson married one of the following people:

SPENCER, Emily
WILLIAMS, Hannah<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
COCKBURN, Henry Herbert

Elizabeth Williams Hanson probably started using the Hanson surname when her mother married Samuel but then when she had her children decided that she should give her proper maiden name when registering them (which was Williams).

Are you mixing up what is written on the birth index for the birth in 1910? The name is William Nunn - William being his first name and Nunn being his surname so he IS the son of Amos Arthur Nunn and born inside the marriage. It seems he dies in the same year and is probably the child mentioned on the 1911 census who has died.

Ok, my father was Douglas Nunn b 1919 , son of Amos Arthur Nunn and Elizabeth Williams Hanson b 1888, sharleston Wakefield, my mother was Pamela Ruth Clamp. my father, his mother Elizabeth Williams Hanson, she died, Amos Arthur Nunn took on a housekeeper, Doris Browne, her husband was Edward Pinkney, he died, Doris was born in Africa ( don't know what part of Africa) but, Doris parents where religious pioneers who built a house in Africa, and owned slaves, apparently, Doris Browne should have been on the ship Titanic, for some reason, her family did not board the Titanic, do not know why ?, but Doris came to England (though she was a white and british) she managed to come across my grandfather Amos Arted out to me, hur Nunn, Amos took her in as housekeeper, cos my dad was the oldest in the family, he had to miss on his education because he had to look after the other members of the family, so my dad did not have a life, hence, housekeeper, Doris Browne, but, they had children, out of wedlock, i.e, my aunt Doris, my dads half sister who has been giving me info, about Dolly Nunn, and her hubby Benny Exley, which you have already pointed out to me, is not to be, my aunt Doris belongs to Doris Browne, my father's half sister. but I have sorted my family tree out now regarding Benjamin Exley with thanks to you all xx

The marriage of Amos Arthur Nunn to Elizabeth Williams Hanson was in 1905 and Harriet Hannah wasn't born until 1906, so she wasn't born before the marriage.

I think you would need to buy Harriet's death certificate to see what the cause of death was to see if this is the person you thought might have gassed herself.
