Not found one...and Patrick is interested in Henry's forebears not descendants....

Flip...if apprenticed at such a young age one assumes he was educated...but it also leads one to think his father must have "been in the same business". Regarding Henry's sister - all I know is what Patrick pm'd

IF, IF, IF, my grandparents named their first born daughter after her then her name would be Elizabeth. ( Their first born son was Henry which may be significant?)

which suggests he knows he had a great aunt named Elizabeth?

Did Henry leave a Will? If so, it might mention family members

That's great Patrick, to see you back to the thread - it makes it easier for anyone trying to look up info to see your answers!!

Couple of things stand out, firstly, how does Patrick know the first born daughter (Henry's sister) was Elizabeth, when we do not know the right family? Where has the info on her come from?

Secondly, I would think Henry had been educated, to be an apprentice railway inspector, and by 1860 to be working in the telegraph office - so must have been able to read/write. Would there be apprenticeship indentures for him? Apprenticeships were sometimes arranged by the parish, especially if they were having to support him. So were lies told about his age in order to secure a position, maybe he was younger than declared (it often happened)?

Thanks for returning to your thread.

Do you mean that you have checked all the births showing on free bmd for anywhere in Britain and none of them fit your Henry Lee?

If he was 16 years 3 months on 1st March, then birth from November 1840?

Patrick

I am attempting to reply to Flip Flop'
Thank you for your most helpful instructions on how to work this unmentionable computer!
In the hope that you may read this the answers to your questions are as follows;
The East India Railway Company recruited Henry Lee in the UK as an apprentice Railway Inspector in their Telegraph speciality some time in 1856, Shipped him out to Calcutta (and I have the details of the two ships he travelled on via Egypt) departing Southampton on 2 January 1857 and arriving in Calcutta on 14 February. He was then employed as an apprentice from 1 March 1857 at the age of 16 years and 3 months. That exact
detail was published in The Calcutta Times and thereafter reflected in the six monthly returns of "who does what where on the East India Railway". How was the EIR so sure I wonder? Did their London office see his baptism record? Did his parents make a late application to register his birth, There was no birth record made from the 4th Quarter of 1840 to the 4th Quarter of 1841 that I could find.
I hope that answers your question, Patrick Lee

I've also had PMs from Patrick. I've given him detailed instructions on how to get back and answer the thread rather than us indiviually, which hopefully will work - but then again I'm not that good at explanations!!

We really need more info from those Indian Railway records - when was Henry born, is there any other indications as to family members (especiall siblings) /locations etc? We have conflicting info (not unusual) re the father - was he George Henry or Henry George??

This has been marked wrongly as answered, Patrick is not familiar with the site so keep looking!

I am not sure Patrick is au fait with the boards.....these are his messages to me...

I hope that I am replying to the right person who has written the list showing Henry Lee married to the widow Hiripsima Mack (nee Carapiet) an Armenian. They are my father's parents ie my grandfather and my grandmother. and I have pictures of their graves in India. My search is for my great grandfather and grandfather's birth place somewhere in the British Isles or Ireland. Henry Lee sailed to India from Southampton on 2 January 1857. Can you please help at all?

No, I do not know my great grandmother's name.I only know my great grandfather's because it was on my grandfather's marriage certificate! IF, IF, IF, my grandparents named their first born daughter after her then her name would be Elizabeth. ( Their first born son was Henry which may be significant?)
Any way thank you for your interest. Off now to Dubai for Christmas with our son. Happy New Year to you,

YES, the tree that includes Hiripsima as my grandmother without any doubt belongs to me. Hiripsima Carapiet, Mack and Henry were all working together in the East India Railway telegraph office in Burdwan. The morse code and key has just been invented and they were all busy sending messages in all directions as the Indian Mutiny) or first freedom revolt if you prefer) was in full swing in 1857!
Off to Dubai on Wednesday; back home for the New Year. Patrick

So I'd guess he didn't mean to mark as answered. He has also confirmed to me his parents which are as we thought Flip and TS

TS - pm from Patrick who is off to Dubai on Wednesday for Christmas and the New Year.....

He doesn't know his great grandmother's name but....Henry had a sister Elizabeth so maybe 2+2=5 but a reasonable chance that Henry's mother was an Elizabeth.

Hi Patrick
Do you know if your grandfather travelled alone to India in 1857?
Where did you find the information on his sailing?
Where did you find the info re the East Indies Railway Company?
Did he ever go back to the UK?
Do you know your great grandmothers name, wife of George Henry Lee?

Have you got ANY other information however small that might give us a lead?

In theory your grandfather Henry Lee 1840/1841 should be on the 1841 and 1851 census but not on the others. I can only find two people that fit that bill. One has parents John and Ann and the other is in a workhouse in 1851 aged 11.
