Mavis, Roy

Thank you both for your response. "Winifred Lilian" died in Westcliffe Hospital, Wescliffe on Sea (now known as Southend Hospital) - I have obtained their address from the website and will be writing to them ASAP. Thank you for the advice re the Census returns. I was aware that first names can be changed as the individual wishes. I think Georgina Lilian was her real name based on two marriage certificates, nine birth certificates, baptism records, my father's military record and numerous voting returns. That is not to say that she was born with another name!!

I will keep trying and hopefully one day I will be able to post something in the "Success stories!"

As Mavis say's Georgina Lilian may not have been the name she was registered under, There was and is no law to stop anyone using what ever name they choose so long as the alias is not used for fraudulent purposes

Have you ever thought that as your mother was known at the Hospital where
she died as Winifred Lilian that this could have been her correct name ??

is it possible to find out from her hospital records her date of birth , thats if you could find them

you can search on Ancestry by the christian name on censuses and put in some think like born at sea or India quite a lot of different answers -- might help

Re the Henry Page Jansmith found in 1911 - the census page has been filled out as if he were a married woman.

It states he was married under one year and there were no children, living or dead, of the marriage.

The vessel he was on was the Fusilier.

Of course he could have been married more than once, and this marriage a later one than to Georgina Lilian's mother, if he is your man.

BatMansDaughter Report 25 Feb 2014 18:41

The Henry that Jansmith found in 1911, his father was Theodore, here's his death and I thought the reg district maybe of interest;

Historical Records
England & Wales, Death Index, 1916-2007 about Theodore Page
Name: Theodore Page
Birth Date: abt 1846
Date of Registration: Jun 1916
Age at Death: 70
Registration district: Richmond
Inferred County: Yorkshire North Riding
Volume: 9d
Page: 852

Also his mothers death was registered in 1918 at the same reg district. In 1911 they were living in Scorton, unfortunately no one else was living with them.

Potty

Sorry - my mistake, I misunderstood you.

It was for Lilian Georgina Page, born 29 December 1898 in the General Lying In Hospital, York Road. Lambeth, Sub District Waterloo Road. No father listed. Mother Maud Page, Dressmaker of Lambeth. She registered the birth with her mark and her address is given as 128 Lambeth Road, Lambeth. Registered on the 3rd January 1999.

Sorry for the confusion.

Gary, you said that you had sent for the cert for the birth registered in 1899 - no father's name mentioned and a DOB of December 1898 - that is the cert I meant.

Many thanks for all your work on my behalf. I have added this List of items to my list of databases to double check. Two sets of eyes etc.

To all those helping me. I have found on the UK Outward Passenger List 1890 - 1960, the following.

Mr H Page, Mrs Page and an infant (less that 1 year) departure 26 November 1902. London - Bombay. Ship's name ROMA

I wonder if this was the family returning to India after "home leave"?

BatMansDaughter Report 24 Feb 2014 14:35

I've been looking at this lady, it could be nothing, however we have very little to go so there's nothing to lose, hence my asking for the date she celebrated her birthday,

Surname First name(s) Age District Vol Page
Births Mar 1898 (>99%)
Tipping Georgina Lilian Pancras 1b 136

Name: Georgina Tipping
Age in 1911: 13
Estimated birth year: abt 1898
Relation to Head: Step Daughter
Gender: Female
Birth Place: LONDON, Middlesex, England
Civil Parish: Kensington
County/Island: London
Country: England
Street address: 6 Denbigh Terrace, Bayswater, Notting Hill W
Occupation: SCHOOL
Registration district: Kensington
Registration District Number: 2
Sub-registration district: Kensington Central
ED, institution, or vessel: 4
Piece: 143
Household Members:
Name Age
Richard Fitzgerald 31
Elizabeth Fitzgerald 33
Georgina Tipping 13

Now Richard marries in 1903 to Elizabeth Slater, her father is Samuel Slater an engineer. She's difficult to find but managed to find a brother Samuel F Slater born 1878. I can't for the life of me work out why Georgina is listed as step daughter!!!!

I can't see Georgina, her mother(?) or any of Elizabeth's sisters in 1901. I believe the Slater parents had died prior to 1901.

Gary, it maybe a complete red herring and I understand your research is based around a father called a Henry and the surname Page, but stranger things have happened.

Who knows!! I have a scrap of paper on which is written "Mum 26-2-1899 Page"
I have no idea where that came from. On her first marriage to Francis Elliott on the 28 May 1919 she gave her age as 22 (c1987). On her second marriage to Walter Mitchell on the 2nd June 1928 she gave her age as 29(c1899). As I said in a previous post I spent very little time living at home and I do not recall her ever celebrating a birthday.

I have looked at all Page arrivals from India 1895-1899 in the Ancestry records - most do not have first names listed, just initials and that is only for the men and some of the single women. There is a page that lists births and deaths on the voyage but I haven't found anything - maybe someone else could also check?

I am thinking I should concentrate on trying to find Henry Page in either the Civil Service or the Indian Army Records and if found to try to get to his wife and Georgina that way.
