Hi Jo

You should keep this family on one thread so that information is not duplicated and helpers can see all the information

Jo, I've mentioned on your other threads about using Trove (the free newspaper archives) when researching in Australia. I've just found this:

I, JAMES BYLOS, also known as Demetrius Chlenizos born at Cerigo, Greece resident 16 vears in Australia now residing at 66 Derwent Street, Glebe, NSW intend to apply for Naturalisation under the Nationality Act 1920-1936.

From The Sydney Morning Herald of 31 May 1943
http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/17850612?searchTerm=%22james%20bylos%22&searchLimits=

The Greek surname isn't too clear so have a look on the link.

It might just be a complete coincidence but thought worth posting as they married in Glebe.

The naturalisation papers are available from the National Archives of Australia

http://recordsearch.naa.gov.au/NameSearch/Interface/ItemDetail.aspx?Barcode=1891871

Contents date range: 1943 - 1943
Series number: A659
Control symbol: 1943/1/3903
Item barcode: 1891871

No, it's not a coincidence!

Australia, Electoral Rolls, 1903-1980
Name: Eileen Ellen Bylos
Gender: Female
Electoral Year: 1943
State: New South Wales
District: West Sydney
Subdistrict: Glebe

Home Duties. Address 66 DERWENT STREET - same as the naturalisation notice.

Just because James Bylos wasn't listed doesn't mean he wasn't living there. As the electoral rolls are lists of people eligible to vote then he wouldn't be included if his naturalisation process wasn't complete.

MarieCeleste Report 30 May 2014 09:02

Jo, it appears then that your grandfather was Greek and his birth name was Demetrius Hlentzos. I would believe the spelling on NAA to be the correct one, other people with the surname Hlentzos also pop up in various parts of NSW.

I strongly recommend you follow up and get a copy of the naturalisation papers, it costs around $27 Aus.

Given that the newspaper notice said he'd been in Australia 16 years then this is possibly his arrival:

Fremantle, Western Australia, Passenger Lists, 1897-1963

Name: Mr M D Hlentzos
Departure Place: London, United Kingdom - he boarded ship at Port Said
Arrival Date: 16 Nov 1926
Arrival Place: Fremantle, Western Australia, Australia
Vessel: Oronsay

No occupation given. Address in Australia stated as 216 Castlereagh Street, Sydney.

I think the record that Chris Ho links may well be connected. The coroner's report is on Ancestry and that man was born in Cerego, Greece.

There are several articles on Trove about it.

Chris Ho :) Report 30 May 2014 12:10

Bottom right corner of page, see Zoom...(slide along to enlarge)

(not sure yet if Anastassios is related, perhaps keep for reference)

Jo

Jo Report 31 May 2014 00:45

I think it said his brother on the artical on fate determined by a toss of a penny.
Well I didn't have any luck with finding anyone that's related this morning, by calling everyone listed.
Where do I get the paper work on naturalisation?
Once again you have all been a great help
Thank you again jo

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 31 May 2014 07:56

Jo, there's no guarantee that Anastassios was his brother, it may have been a cousin.

I posted the links above for the naturalisation records but unfortunately the search results time out after a few hours so you'll need to do the search yourself. The records are on National Archives of Australia.

Here's the link to do a name search:
http://recordsearch.naa.gov.au/NameSearch/Interface/NameSearchForm.aspx

Put Hlentzos in the Family Name box and select "Immigration and Naturalisation records" from the drop down menu next to Category of Records and then press the Search button. There should then be a box saying there are 6 records found - click on "Display" and then you'll see them.

When you select the record for Hlentzos, Demetrios then there should be a link on the top right of the record that says "Request Copy" - follow that process.

Of course, you may want to try some searches under other categories to see what else comes up.
