Sandy Report 2 Oct 2014 06:13

I am looking for details of what happened to Samuel Bailey
Son of John and Elizabeth Bailey. 1891 Census- 2 Canbone RD, Chorlton Cum Hardy, Lancaster, England
John Bailey died of accidental poisoning in 1894 and 2 of his children, Samuel and Elsie went to The Manchester Warehousemen and Clerks’ Orphan School after his death and Samuel left in 1901. The other 2 children were Marjorie and Dorothy.
He married Nina Louise Jarman Mar 27th 1907 in Chorlton (I purchased the certificate) and then they left for Australia.
I do not know the dates of travel but my grandfather Sidney Edward Bailey was born Dec 30 1911 in NSW Australia.
My great (or not so "great") grandmother Nina gave him up at approx 6 weeks of age and also his brother Les at about the same age. Nina was with another man when she was pregnant with Les and that was the last anyone knew of Samuel. There is speculation that he may have gone back to England. His son Sidney tried very hard to find him as an adult with no luck.
If anyone is able to help I would be so very happy.
Thank you
Sandy

Welcome to the boards, Sandy.

Just to get you started - have you looked to see if Samuel is in anyone's tree on here, and made contact with them?

(First time I have encountered a search for an 'Old Waconian' !)

Sandy

Do you know where in NSW Sidney was born ?

Sandy

Sandy Report 2 Oct 2014 08:23

Funny story - my father told me he was born in Perth, Western Australia, but I don't think he really knew much at all... so, all I know is that Nina Bailey stayed in NSW, and died in Botany, NSW. I am pretty sure that both of the boys stayed in NSW in foster homes or the like until old enough and then Sidney went on to Victoria where he met my grandmother. Both of the boys & Nina's daughter (Cecilia) were all given up, and Cecilia did not even make it home from hospital before being given up.
So I have no starting point, even checking electoral rolls was useless, as there was no Samuel Bailey before 1930.
I know it is not much help

There is no record, as far as I can see, of Samuel Bailey leaving UK for Australia between 1907 and 1911

Purely as a matter of interest, what was Nina's birth name?

She married under Jarman or Parker, but there is no birth for either name

How old was she in 1907?

Sandy

Sandy Report 2 Oct 2014 09:04

Hi Jacqueline,

That's correct, I have not been successful in finding any travels for them both
Nina's birth record is below, but on her marriage certificate for her and Samuel it states that her name is Nina Louise Parker otherwise Nina Louise Jarman - her father's name is the same - Edward Parker otherwise Edward Jarman, but from what I can gather that is because her grandfather (Edward Jarman 1815)married Mary Jarman (born Parker) - and another piece of info that I find interesting is that when she married George Arnott, here in Australia after Samuel, she stated her name as - Nina Louise Jarman! She would have been Nina Louise Bailey, so perhaps that marriage was not legal?
Nina Louise Jarman
Gender: Female
Birth: Dec 18 1883
Christening: Sep 20 1885
Manchester, Lancashire, England
Father: Edward Jarman
Mother: Louise Jarman
Indexing Project (Batch) Number: C00771-0
System Origin: England-EASy
GS Film number: 438183
Reference ID: yr 1885 p 137

Hi,
Nina (Jarman, Parker, Bailey, Arnott) died on 31/07/1967 in Botany, NSW, Australia, at age 83. She has been relatively easy to trace, but it is Samuel Bailey that is the mystery...

No birth in WA for Sidney so rule that one out.

Edit
I can find no travel for them either to OZ.

Great find Chris

Will post this on thread for refs for us

granted.
Samuel Bailey, who petitioned for a dis
solution of his marriage with Nina Louise
Bailey, said they were married in Man
chester, England, in 1907, and came to
Western Australia in 1910. They went to
Broomehill, where petitioner took a con
tract for clearing with two brothers who
were farmers, and respondent took a posi
tion as housekeeper. When the contract
was completed in about ten mon'ths peti
uoner decided to go elsewhere, but respon
dent declined to go away, giving no rea
son. Petitioner went to Avondale andFix this text
wrote to his wife repeatedly, but she did
not reply. At a later dete he learnt she
was pregnant and he saw her at da private
hospital in Perth, where she had a son. of
whom he was not the father.. A rec6ncilia
tion was agreed to, hbut just before leaving
the hospital respondent renounced it and
returned to Broomehill. Since then she
had '!ed a second child, but he did not know
who was the father.
His Honour granted a decree nisi, re
turnable in six months.

Susan, thank you, yes I think it is very strange too. And now that I know Samuel was in Wa ( I am in QLD) I can look further as well. He may well of remarried, who knows??

But I am super happy now that I know where my grandfather (Sid) was born. I was told recently by my Aunt that Sid travelled to WA looking for his roots, but a family member asked why? when he was born in NSW? so, as you can see it is a little muddled, but thanks to Chris I have a launch pad.
I would be so grateful if you looked further into this from WA as well.
Thank you again
:-D
