Given that we're a volunteer project there's no funding for certificates, etc. but I might just have to dig into my pocket for that death certificate.

Catherine, he does look a decent chap and, according to the parish newsletters of the time, he was a good man. Perhaps there was a reason why the marriage wasn't meant to be? It was a waste of every single life that was lost - that's why we're trying to pay tribute to our local men.

She has a sister Laura who could well be the witness and the marriage cert certainly looks to be MALLINSON to me. :-(

Edith said she was 23 when she married in 1908, and did not give a second forename

Her father, Thomas, was said to be a Commercial Traveller

If her husband abandoned her, she may well have reverted to her maiden name

The 1935 ancestry image looks like an "original" - the M's are all different. If that's correct then it looks to me as though Edith signed as Mallinson and so did Laura.

The 1908 certificate looks as though it has all been completed in one hand, all as Matheson. Would it be worth looking at the original of that to see if there was a mistake and perhaps to compare Edith's signatures (although 27 is years have passed.)

Very co-incidental that the Father is Tom and he is/was a Commercial Traveller on both.

By comparing the original signatures of my great aunt's husband's bigamous 2nd marriage, I am sure he was one and the same person, despite having moved a couple of counties over and adding an R (Bicker/Bricker) to his name, which had disappeared by the 1911 census - when great aunt thought he was in Canada, as the story went!

Edit - have just seen Dea's 1901 census find for ?the Edith Mallinson of 1935

Was a bit of a long shot. I think the Laura probably proves that it is the wrong Edith although there is a Tom and Esther who have a daughter Edith born 1884.

Back to the drawing board :-(

Rootgatherer - I think that the Edith in 1891 is a strong contender, I posted that census on the first page. Although the father's occupation as per the census doesn't fit, it could have changed .......

Jacqueline - I'm not sure why, but I think if there was any abandoning done then it was by Edith and not by James. Just my gut reaction. I know he lied about his marital status on the 1911 census but he may have had reason to think the marriage was over and done with (although obviously not) or was just in denial. He was well known locally and Edith could have easily found him - they married in Tynemouth so she would have some acquaintance with the area.
