The Edith Mallinson is with her family in 1911, I know that's a logical place for a separated woman to be but it somehow doesn't sit right, not least because of the London address on the marriage (I know info can be false). I don't think the omission of a middle name on a marriage certificate rules someone out.

I've just looked at the image for the naturalization record for Mark Bergman - the address for him is about an 8 minute walk from that given for Edith on CWGC, I think I'll follow him up ....

This is interesting, the Stockton Edith is in Sunderland as is the witness Mark Bergman:

1891 England, Wales & Scotland Census
East Street, Bishop Wearmouth, Chester Le Street, Durham, England
Household Members
First name(s) Last name Relationship Marital status Gender Age Birth year Occupation Birth place

Abraham Bergman Head Married Male 30 1861 Drapers Traveller Poland (Russia)
Tobe Bergman Wife Married Female 38 1853 Poland (Russia)
Nathan Bergman Son Single Male 19 1872 Tailor Poland (Russia)
>>>Marks Bergman Son Male 15 1876 Tailor Poland (Russia)
Jacob Bergman Son Male 13 1878 Poland (Russia)
Rusa Bergman Daughter Female 11 1880 Poland (Russia)
Rische Bergman Daughter Female 9 1882 Poland (Russia)
Mumechan Bergman Son Male 5 1886 Poland (Russia)
Lena Bergman Daughter Female 1 1890 Poland (Russia)

I've checked the naturalization for his brother Nathan - they both refer to their father as Hirsch but I'm sure this is the same family.

And those brothers move to Heaton too ......

MC - I don't know whether this is the same Mark but I found this marriage:

Lancashire Marriage indexes for the years: 1913
Surname Forename(s) Surname Forename(s) Church / Register Office Registers At Reference
BERGMAN Mark LESSAR Deborah Manchester, Great Synagogue Manchester 512/18/4

and a death:

Deaths Mar 1946 (>99%)
Bergman Mark 70 Salford 8d 734

I then found a tree on Ancestry which has this marriage and death and has this couple as Mark's parents :

Abran Hirsh Bergman
Toba Buki

Am I missing something - I think Edith Esther daughter of Tom and Esther and born Stockton is your girl....that death I posted would be a good buy!!

I wonder whether it was "their secret" and then he died????

I really don't think the Huddersfield one with sister Laura is connected.

The only negative that I can see to that being the correct Edith is that on the 1891, 1901 and 1911 census Tom gives his occupation as an Iron Moulder. Are you thinking that Edith thought "Commercial Traveller" sounded a better occupation?

Rootgatherer - where did you find the 1911 for Tom Matheson? I've been looking for that to see if he'd changed jobs.

I personally think that "iron moulder" is no less a job than "commercial traveller" and agree that it's the weak link. Although James only left around £2,000 to his sister (OK, a canny bit back then) they were a family of some repute in the area.

Just thought I'd give the kind helpers on this thread an update:

Found Edith on the 1939 Register, she's listed as a widow at Heathdale Gardens, Newcastle upon Tyne (similar district to the address she gave on CWGC) and there are two other adults (apparently unrelated) in the household.

She gives her birth date as 24 March 1889 but someone has later written "84 GCW" above the birth year. So, that makes this birth highly probable

Births Jun 1884
Mathison Edith Esther Stockton 10a 73

and this death

Deaths Sep 1959
ERRINGTON Edith E 75 Nthmbld.S. 1b 299

One of our volunteers was at Kew recently and copied some extracts from James Errington's officers service records. Amongst the papers was a letter from James' solicitors to his sister acknowledging that they were aware of Edith's existence and that she was entitled to his army pension.

I doubt we'll ever know why they lived apart but at least we know what became of Edith.
