The Clergy Orphan School was set up for deceased clergy's sons so I take it there would have been a considerable emphasis on religion (James went into the church)

Christ's Hospital School aka the Bluecoat School has a "complex set of scholarships", Alfred could have qualified due to his deceased father's occupation. Previous pupils include Charles Lamb& Samuel Coleridge so it would appear that this school is unconnected with Alfred's choice of occupation/

Yes Coleridge's father was a reverend an d Lamb's a lawyer....maybe children of professionals?

Strange we can't find John

What a surprise when I started my computer this morning. I was away all day yesterday.
Thanks so very much for your help everyone. I was up against a brick wall and you have helped me to make sense of a lot of hunches and suspicions.
I had found Mary Francis visiting John Johnsons farm in Derby with a 20 year old Mary E Francis in the 1861 Census, and this caused me to suspect their were more children of James and Mary Francis.
Elizabeth Mary Cordes Francis was obviously known as 'Mary'. She was visiting her sister Georgianna in the 1871 Census as Mary Hirst (clergyman's wife). Obviously newly married.

It was interesting to read the newspaper articles, in particular the fundraising for Rev James Francis's young family. An article stated at the time of going to press the charity fund had reached seven hundred pounds, so it obviously allowed for the children to have a good education.

I had guessed Mary Francis's maiden name was Powell but now see it was Price.
My mind is racing -
My mother has an extremely old embroidery sampler given to her by her mother. The last embroidery line reads Emma Richardson 1839.
I have been unable to locate an Emma Richardson in our family tree on any side.
But I did find a record of a marriage between a Harold Joseph Hirst and an Emma Richardson in March 1924 at West Derby. Harold's mother was a Margaret Price. This was well after the 1839 date on the sampler so possibly just a coincidence, and a mystery that will never be solved.

Thanks again to you all.

(just as Ollivant (with link posted earlier) think you will find that Lewis, Powell, Cordes, were all known to Rev. James)

(James Jamieson Cordes was one!, on google, as well as in Welsh newspapers, items relating to Meetings etc.)
