I'll reply here, as my reply is of general interest, I think.

I think it's always worth supplementing the GRO index with a local index if one is available, so it's worth bookmarking:

as this has links to other indexes besides GlosBMD

Most local refs have 3 elements:
1) a subdistrict code (for Bs & Ds) or a church/rego-office code (for Ms) - GlosBMD translate this for you, but not all local indexes do so
2) a register # - assigned sequentially within the subdistrict or church - most rego's have 500 entries (some registrars marr rego's have 200 entries)
3) an entry # or a page # - marrs nearly always have an entry # so one knows who wed whom pre-1912.
(there are 2 marr entries per page - Bs & Ds have 5 entries per page - later GRO rego's are the same, but the early GRO rego's had twice as many entries per page)

Local indexes must have a local ref for them to work as indexes - they usually tell you what this ref is. This ref contains info (as outlined above).
Local indexes must enable the looker-up to identify the subject - they can have difft ideas on what info the looker-upper needs to make this identification, and this is another reason why they're worth checking.
(Such other info might be the mum's maiden surname on births pre-1911q3, or age at death pre-1866).

Sounds like you are really getting into your family history research. Be careful, once you start it can be difficult to stop. Always more stuff to find out, to go back another generation, one more trip to the records office etc. If you need more help, you know where to come to. Always happy to help on the boards.

thanks...what a shame we can't go back & meet these people!

All I want to know now is why George b. 1852 & his brother Charles b. 1858 (with Charles being witness at George's wedding 1877 & both families living on the same Street ref 1881 Census) fell out so much so that it was a taboo subject for my dad (b. 1948) to ever mention the other Spregg family whilst growing up in Stow...well, too much to ask for GR to explain that!

My Christmas present to dad is as done as possible (& I'm sure he'll be thrilled), I'd like to thank you all again for your help - I'm very new to all this & wouldn't have got very far without your help.

1861 shows Harriett Sprague a=42 in piece # 1790, along with her kids Sarah 15, Jane 12, George 10, John 6, Charles 3.
There could be non-Spragues in the h/h, but I've no sub, so can't say.

a last request for help if possible please...

I am now concentrating on Charles's wife, Fanny, Charles Spragg or Spregg (or other variations) b.1858 married Fanny b. 1857 (from Census records) but I can't find the spouse details on the marriage record so have no maiden name, unless I'm doing something wrong?

thanks - I will go back through all this info & piece something together. I'm quite interested in the relationship between George & his brother Charles - both families remained in Stow & my father was aware of the other family whilst growing up in Stow but was always told 'they're nothing to do with us' - there is a mystery to solve there ;-)

Spagnuolo? I think someone must have been on the Christmas sherry.
Some of my ancestors ended up with some weird and wonderful names too, but just goes to show, as I said in an earlier post, how you have to keep and open mind with this family tree lark.

Although the 1851 census has been posted twice, one poster shows a George aged 14 months, the other 14 days - which looks more like the original, which would make quite a difference when looking for a birth registration.

Other possible spelling variations maybe which appear in the area when looking for births -
Spreag and Spreagh AND

How's about this as FMP's census attempt for the family in 1861 - Spagnuolo !!!!!!!

The 1861 shows all children born Stow, but the only possible registrations I can see for Stow in the Wold RD with surnames Sp* or Spr* are
John Sprag 1854, Charles Sprag 1857 and William Spragg 1868 which would fit given ages on 1861/71 census

? Perhaps the others were just not registered, there were no penalties until the 1870's for not registering.

05 September 1903 - Cheltenham Chronicle - Cheltenham, Gloucestershire

STOW-ON-THE-WOLD.
George Spregg, labourer, of Stow-on-the- Wold, was brought up in custody charged with stealing potatoes from an allotment in the occupation of Mr. Augustus Green, of Stow, brewer, situated in the parish of Lower Swell. Accused was further charged with assaulting P.S. Simpson.
The sergeant said that on August 29th he saw the prisoner on Mr. Green's allotment digging potatoes, Witness asked him to account for the potatoes. The prisoner became violent, and witness took him into custody. Near the police station, prisoner threw witness against the wall, cutting his eye. Prisoner was sentenced to one month's hard labour, this punishment covering both cases.
