All this is very interesting and I'm very grateful.

Signing off now and will 'digest' it tomorrow!

Hi Nicola

My husband and his brother are the great grandsons of Alexander Knyvett and Louisa Janet. Their son, William, who married Virginia Delacombe, has one child, Godfrey Alexander V Knyvett, my husband's father.
I am unable to shed any light on the probate question, but am pleased to hear that Alexander was held in such high regard It is always nice to hear some personal details about the ancestors being researched.

Hello Chris, welcome to the GR boards. I'm sure Nicola will be in touch with you very soon.

Your contact is what makes these boards so worthwhile - what a good result.

Hello Chris.

I'm really pleased that my ancestor's journal has revealed that your husband's great grandfather was so well thought of. What a lovely little story.

I'm now on a further page of the journal and my ancestor writes: "I went out & called on Mrs. Knyvett, whom I found to be a very pretty, attractive young woman; & saw her bright girls." These must be your William's sisters.

I'll let you know if there are any further snippets.

Chris: and I've pm'd you, too.
If you know of the descendants of William's sisters Margaret and Beatrice [see my above], then do let them know that their ancestors were regarded as 'bright girls'! The journal entry was dated Saturday 21st December 1889.

Ooh, more has been revealed in my ancestor's journal!

She writes that in early 1890, "Mrs. K and the children were to sail for England on the Khedive on the 23rd" [January, I think].

The ship's name isn't easy to read and I think that I have transcribed it correctly. But when googling that ship's name, the internet entries are for a vessel very much newer than c.1880's.

Can anyone find the passenger list for this family, please??

More scratching around has at least found the ship!:-

Khedive 1871 1897 sold to Duda, Abdullah & Co, Bombay.

But I'm still searching the for Knyvett family sailing home to England in January 1890 please ........

Chris Ho :) Report 9 Feb 2016 16:37

The passenger lists date from 1878 to 1888 and 1890 to 1960. However, many of the pre-1890 lists were irregularly destroyed by the Board of Trade in 1900. Therefore, there are not many lists included in this database that date from these earlier years.

Hi Nicola

Thank you for the new info. Margaret and Beatrice are William's sisters. Margaret married Francis McNamara in 1910, and things became rather complicated as after Margaret and William both died, their respective spouses - Francis McNamara and Virginia (Delacombe) then married each other! Virginia subsequently died in Kenya and is buried there.
