Breaking news at end of thread........

I have found this marriage in FreeBMD :-

Marriages Mar 1882
Pettinger Mary Hannah Bradford Y.
9b 227

ADAMS Charles Bradford Y
9b 227

Would it show up anywhere else with more detail as Charles does not show up in the 1891 census and I need to find a way of learning more about his past. I have a single line for Charles H Adams in 1881 but, as the marriage has not yet happened, there is no way of proving the connection. I find this all very frustrating and hope one of you clever people can see a way round it please?

Many thanks,
Frances

Think you may have to purchase the marriage certificate, so you will then have
his fathers name to avoid tracing back the wrong Charles.

As Jan says, the marriage certificate would be your best bet. It would give his approximate age and his father's name and occupation if you are lucky.

The only other thing to do would be to go to the Yorkshire County Records office to look at the parish records, but if you don't know the exact parish then you may have to look through a lot of records.

Thanks Kath and lostmeboardname . Seems like I need to be persuasive to get the marriage certificate then.

Thank you malyon, your findings are most interesting as I thought the family had stayed in Yorkshire, from

Births Mar 1890
Adams Grace Beatrice Bradford, Y.
9b 167

Births Jun 1888
Adams Lilian May Bradford, Y.
9b 219

Births Dec 1883
ADAMS Gertrude Mary Skipton
9a 47

so I wonder why they were christened elsewhere?

On the image for the 1899 baptism of Emily Beatrice Adams, father Charles was a brass caster and they lived 1 Court, 1 House, Milton Street.

Frances, do you know anything about your Charles' occupation?

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 15 Jan 2016 10:54

This seems to be the 1901 census for the family Frances has given the births for:

1901 England, Wales & Scotland Census Transcription
9, Friendly Street, Shipley, North Bierley, Yorkshire, England

First name(s) Last name Relationship Marital status Gender Age Birth year Occupation Birth place

Mary Adams Head Married Female 45 1856 - Retford, Nottinghamshire, England
Gertrude Adams Daughter Single Female 17 1884 Woollen Weaver Skipton, Yorkshire, England
Lilian Adams Daughter Single Female 13 1888 Worsted Spinner Windhill, Yorkshire, England
Grace Adams Daughter Single Female 11 1890 - Bradford, Yorkshire, England

So are those Warwickshire and Worcester baptisms just a coincidence?

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 15 Jan 2016 11:09

I think they were a coincidence, they belong to this family:

1911 England, Wales & Scotland Census Transcription
2 Bk 69 Guildford St Birmingham, Birmingham, Warwickshire, England

Household Members
First name(s) Last name Relationship Marital status Sex Occupation Age Birth year Birth place

Chales Henry Adams Head Married Male Brass Caster 40 1871 Warwickshire Bham
Mary Hannah Adams Wife Married Female None 42 1869 Warwickshire Bham
Harriett Elisbert Adams Daughter - Female School 12 1899 Warwickshire Bham
Dora May Adams - - Female School 10 1901 Warwickshire Bham Transcription
Charles Tomas Francis Adams Son - Male School 9 1902 Warwickshire Bham Transcription
Henry Percy Adams Son - Male School 7 1904 Warwickshire Bham
Ethel Adams Daughter - Female School 5 1906 Warwickshire Bham
Nora Everline Adams Daughter - Female - 2 1909 Warwickshire Bham

1 child had died (there is an infant death to match the 1900 baptism for Emily Beatrice). This couple married 13 years.

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 15 Jan 2016 11:14

This is that family in 1901 (address matches baptism):

Frances

Frances Report 15 Jan 2016 15:15

Thank you Marie Celeste, I am sure you are right that the Midlands Adams family are just coincidence as, working back from the known marriage that Chris quotes all the Bradford/Shipley stuff fits and is known by 'the Pettinger family' for whom I am doing the sleuthing. It really had me going for a while .....!

I have asked 'the family' for some more detail on Charles and await their reply.

Frances

Frances Report 16 Jan 2016 11:39

In the 1901 census above Mary Adams gives herself as married, so Charles is still alive. Can anybody see him around in the 1901 as I would like to find out where he was born and then another census to show him with his family please?

Many thanks,
Frances

Thinking about this some more it might be better to aim at 1891, when Charles, Grace's father might be closer to the family ??

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 16 Jan 2016 13:28

Without any idea of when/where he was born, or his occupation, then that's going to be tricky. FindMyPast fetches up 1,674 for that name on the 1901 census. Obviously, a proportion can be eliminated by way of age.

It would be like looking for a needle in a haystack.

You say in your opening post you have a possible Charles H Adams in 1881 but the marriage you suggest has no middle name.

Do you have any other info about him?

I haven't yet found Mary or the girls in 1911.

Frances

Frances Report 16 Jan 2016 13:39

Thank you MarieCeleste, thinking about it some more, Charles might have been only 20 when he married Mary Hannah so it is quite hopeless to know who Charles was. I hope I don't have to wait until my new grandson has been born before I get a response from the family !

Grace Beatrice got married in 1915 but perhaps the family were averse to census in 1911
