I think the Elizabeth (age 4 on the 1841 census) is actually his wife and think the original image for the 1841 is faded. I think her age should be 40 or 41.

This appears to be them in 1861 at Andrew's Lane- same address as in 1841:

Name: William Newill

Thank you AustinQ, no I have been naughty and moved it to a new thread as I thought it had got 'lost' but your response is exactly what I was hoping for and gives me a new area for research.
Your comment on Elizabeth is most interesting as I found

in IGI and she is probably

Birth Date 26 May 1784
Father's Name Joseph Dudley

Mother's Name Mary

Actually, by calculation 1784 is far too early so there must be another Elizabeth in there somewhere?

Looking through the 1851 census from another source, the birth date for Elizabeth Dudley is given as 1800 so perhaps the age of 57 should read 51?

Sorry Austin, seems like you are before me yet again. At least we can admit 'great minds think alike' lol

I think we have to be careful with Charles b 1801 as there does seem to be more than one.

Instead of getting another marriage certificate it is probably worth getting Charles birth certificate to find out exactly who his parents were.

What slightly puzzles me is that George in 1851 is a policeman on the one posted for Charles and yet on daughter baptism in 1853 is a labourer. Why would someone leave the police to become a labourer? Not impossible i know.

Hi lancashireAnn, thank you for your concern about Charles c.1801 and I have seen one reference to 1799, but there are no entries in IGI giving parents so no going further back on this name. The 1861, after his second marriage to Elizabeth Mayes, does confirm 1801 and he seems to have only one child, George c.1831, by his first marriage, who carries the line forward and is the father of Charles on the 1882 Marriage Certificate as well as living locally at that time (1881 Census).
These families seem to have allegiance to Methodist/Chapel and perhaps their records are not so well covered.
