Rose's father had a tough life by the looks of things- his mother died in 1890:

oh no that is so sad :-( :-(

AustinQ

AustinQ Report 19 Mar 2016 14:22

It is terribly sad, it seems after the Mum died the whole family fell apart. It makes it hard work to follow Alfred's siblings through the census too.

Eunice

Eunice Report 19 Mar 2016 14:23

just a thought it says that Florence and Charles were his children but on the 1881 census he has Stephen age 6 George age 5 Alfred age 3 henry age 0 no Florence or Charles

AustinQ

AustinQ Report 19 Mar 2016 14:25

The children in the workhouse in 1891 were too young to be on the 1881. They were born between 81 & 91

AustinQ

AustinQ Report 19 Mar 2016 14:52

Yes, the youngest, Charles, was just a baby too. I've been trying to find the older children from the 1881 census- not sure they all survived though

In 1891 Stephen (Alfred's oldest brother) was lodging with the Hayes family age 16 and working as a labourer.

Eunice

Eunice Report 19 Mar 2016 15:05

well at least he found some hope in his life and we no Alfred survived but how would be nice to find out that leaves George because he would have been about 15 at this time and Alfred about 13 thank you for all this help Austin

AustinQ

AustinQ Report 19 Mar 2016 15:21

Eunice, there is an article in the paper re an Alfred Bush- but I'm not 100% that it's your Alfred- although it looks likely.

Bristol Mercury - Monday 23 June 1890

BRISTOL POLICE COURT- SATURDAY

THEFT FROM A BARGE.
Alfred Bush, aged 14 years was charged on remand with stealing, in company of three other lads, a drawer and various articles, value 5s, the property of Thomas Ferris, captain of the barge 'Faith'. The case was proved on Friday, the boys having been seen on the previous evening to forcibly enter the cabin of the barge whilst it was lying in the Floating Harbour near Canon's Marsh. Prisoner was committed to gaol for 10 days, and ordered to be afterwards sent to a reformatory for five years.
-------------------------------------------

The above refers to this Alfred which could be yours:

1891
Alfred Bush Under detention in Reformatory 14, Bristol

Civil Parish: Oldland
Ecclesiastical parish: Holy Trinity
County/Island: Gloucestershire
Registration district: Keynsham
ED, institution, or vessel: 10

AustinQ

AustinQ Report 19 Mar 2016 16:07

I know the age is a little out, but wondered if this was George in 1891:

1891
George Bush Under Detention 14, Scholar, Bristol

Civil Parish: St Stephens
Ecclesiastical parish: St Stephen
County/Island: Gloucestershire
Registration district: Bristol
ED, institution, or vessel: Formidable
Piece: 1959 Folio: 122 Page Number: 2

Eunice

Eunice Report 19 Mar 2016 16:07

looks very much like our Alfred and looks like he really had a bad time after his mother died I was just sat here thinking how Alfred would be looking after his brother George both being so young but looks like George was on his own for a few yrs it just is so so sad

Eunice

Eunice Report 19 Mar 2016 16:25

George was 2 years older than Alfred so he would have been 16 17 in 1891 but it could still be him if the age was given wrong or printed wrong

AustinQ

AustinQ Report 19 Mar 2016 17:13

I think it's going to be difficult to be certain finding George as I can't see a definite birth registration for him or baptism.
