Hi,

I am researching my great grandmother Lottie Bloomer who was born in Walsall 1884. I thought I had pretty much summed up everything I could possibly know about her until I searched the British paper archives where I found a Lottie Bloomer aged 4 in 1888 had been raped in walsall by a man who was lodging with them. However it says she was with her adopted family mr and mrs Williams - something I was never aware of and to make things more confusing, I have found a 1901 census with her living back with her biological mother (Also Lottie bloomer (nee Haywood) and sister Florence May Bloomer in walsall. Do you think the story is a coincidence with the name and same birth year and place or is it possible she went to live back with her biological mother after the event or after she was old enough to leave the house? Would she of know her biological mother was?
Just to give some further insight, I know her father died when she was 2/3 so could of been given up as her mom was pregnant with Lotties sister when her father died and may of been too much. Well thats one thought anyway.
I also have a photo of lottie and her sister together when they were little - lottie about 6 and florence about 4 so they were obviously together at that point in time.

Hoping someone has better knowledge than me on this sort of history.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you x

There was no such thing as 'adoption' before around 1927 when adoption became legal so she would only have been looked after by the William's family.

One article re the incident says that the Williams family were living at 27 Frederick Street, Walsall

AustinQ

AustinQ Report 19 Apr 2016 12:07

EDIT: This family don't appear to be living at this address in 1891, so probably just coincidence.

That might just be a coincidence Austin - the Williams Family were there on 1901 but the offence took place in 1888.

These were the families living there in 1881 and 1891:

Thanks everyone for the input

what I know is that Lottie Bloomer (1884) married William Wright
14 January 1905 - Walsall

And her sister Florence May Bloomer Married Walter Knight
December 1903
(So Maylon that was the right wedding info you found)

Funnily enough in the 1901 census they are listed living with their mother Lottie Bloomer at 45 Wolverhampton Street
Daughter Lottie was living with her husband William at 44 Wolverhampton Street
And Florence May Bloomer was living with her husband at 46 Wolverhampton Street.
So they all lived next door together.

Not sure the distance between the wolverhampton street address and the Francis street address (address of the "adoptees") so possibly she was being looked after by them however it does say in the newspaper article it the williams were the adoptive family

I can't find any information either about a marriage to james bloomer (Lotties father) although this is the name listed on the marriage documents for Lottie and Florence - He was deceased by the time they were both married and listed as a tailor
I found the marriage info of James and Charlotte (lottie) in Aston - which technically is in Birmingham and I found an article in the papers about James dying in birmingham the year which Charlotte would of been pregnant with florence. Which is where he worked so would make sense that they married there and then Charlotte lived where she was born in Walsall.

Thanks Austin for the info about the williams will have a further look in to these, to see if there is any relative connection etc.

Just unclear as to if she was given up for adoption or to be looked after is it usual that they would of been living back with the biological mother? I can't find any other census info about wether Lottie or Florence before the 1901 census so its bit confusing as to where they both before then?
