yes Rob- it certainly looks like he was a Hussey.

Just one thing though Rob, Nehemiah/ Jeremiah died in 1854, so when all three children married (Mary Ann, Eliza & George), he was long dead. They may not have even known their father's name was Hussey- as when their mother married in 1857 her name was Purser.

ChristinaS

ChristinaS Report 26 Feb 2017 19:18

One of them is a Hussey. Another 3xgt.grandfather (Mary Ann's father) is probably/maybe a Purser.

I can't see anything straightforward for the family of Mary Ann Purser.

This is possibly her in 1841

Lambeth - Harlington Street

Sarah Purser 37
Mary Ann Purser 15
(both Yes for born in Surrey)

Can't find anything before that though. :-(

So......

If I understand correctly, Mary Ann Purser had her three children by Jeremiah Hussey but wasn't married to him.

Seemingly when Mary Ann,one of the daughter's, got married (to Ernest Pointing) Jeremiah gave the surname Pircer/Percer. I assume therefore this was potentially to save the blushes of Mary Ann?

Therefore my 3x great grandfather is actually a Hussey not a Purser?

AustinQ Report 26 Feb 2017 15:38

Although the children were registered as Hussey surname, they all correctly reverted to Purser as their Mother had never married Nehemiah Hussey.

This is daughter Mary's marriage posted by Chris earlier:

Name: Ernest Albert Pointing
Spouse: Mary Ann Pircer (percer on image)
Record Type: Marriage
Event Date: 11 Nov 1883
Parish: St Peter, Vauxhall
Borough: Lambeth
Father Name: William Pointing
Spouse Father: Jeramiah Pircer (Neamiah Percer on image)
Register Type: Parish Register

AustinQ

AustinQ Report 26 Feb 2017 15:25

Despite registering the children with surname Hussey, Mary Ann Purser never married Nehemiah Hussey -he was already married to Mary Ann Aguirra, so they just lived together. (pretending to be man & wife!).

After Nehemiah's death, when Mary Ann Purser married Charles Payne, she was officially a single woman (spinster) as she'd never married.

Hi All.

At the risk of sounding a bit dim, I think I am confused!!! :-S Apologies.

It seems as though my 2 x great grandfather George William Purser was born to Mary Ann (which is interesting because he married Mary Ann Naylor) but her maiden name was Purser. That seems to suggest that she was single when she had George? Otherwise I would have thought one of her husbands (assuming she had a couple) would have been a Purser but Jeremiah (or Nehemiah) was a Hussey and Charles was a Payne but by the time he married Mary Ann, George was already born.

So who was the Purser that Mary Ann married or did she have George (and Eliza and Mary Ann) outside of a marriage?

Am I missing something here?

Yours confused,

Rob

This is Nehamiah's first wife (already living with her new partner in 1851- before she married him):

So all ties up nicely-
Nehemiah married in 1843 but shortly split with his wife - she was a little older than him.

His wife, Mary Ann moves in with and later marries John Wheatherby.

Nehemiah moves in with Mary Ann Purser and have children together (but never marry).

And Mary Ann Purser later marries Charles Payne.

AustinQ

Nehemiah's first wife remarried soon after his death:

I wondered if this could have been Nehemiah's wife- a bit older than him, which might be the reason they split??

ChristinaS,

These are good leads and things are starting to stack up. My George was a shoemaker.

I can't find the GRO registrations for George, Eliza and Mary Ann Hussey that show the mmn. Are they on Genes Reunited or are you looking at something else?

Thanks for all your help.

The 1851 Hussey census has the whole of the Hussey family living next door to each other.

Jeremiah was in fact Nehemiah- this is the family in 1841:

1841 England, Wales & Scotland Census Transcription
Harlington Street, St Mary, Lambeth, Surrey, England

James Hussey Male 30 1811 - Carpenter
Ann Hussey Female 30 1811 -
Nehemiah Hussey Male 15 1826
Joseph Hussey Male 10 1831 -
Sarah Hussey Female 7 1834 Surrey, England
Martha Hussey Female 2 1839 Surrey, England
Sarah Bull Female 15 1826 Surrey, England
Samuel Wicks Male 30 1811 -
Ann Wicks Female 30 1811
-------------------------------------

Burial:
First name(s) Nehemiah
Last name Hussey
Age at death 30
Birth year 1824
Burial year 1854
Burial date ? Jan 1854
Denomination Anglican
Residence White Horse Street
Residence county Surrey
Parish Lambeth, St John the Evangelist, Waterloo
County Surrey
-----------------------------------------------------

However- this looks like his marriage:

Name: Mary Ann Aguirra -of full age
Spouse: Nehemiah Hussey- of full age- chairmaker
Record Type: Marriage
Event Date: 23 Jan 1843
Parish: St Mary, Lambeth
Borough: Lambeth
Father Name: Joseph Aguirra- Musician (deceased)
Spouse Father: James Hussey- Carpenter
Register Type: Parish Register
-----------------------------------------

On the 1857 marriage of Mary Ann Purser to Charles Payne- Mary is listed as spinster- so it seems she wasn't married to Hussey, and was not the Mary Ann that Nehemiah married in 1843.

I wonder if Nehemiah left his first wife and lived with Mary Purser- hence why the children later went by the names Purser?

Robert

Robert Report 26 Feb 2017 13:04

Chris,

The death seems to match up. George died on 23 April 1897 at St Thomas' hospital in Lambeth.

The Jeremiah in the Banns for Mary Ann and Ernest (1883) is unlikely to be my Jeremiah as he died before 1871 when his son George married Mary Ann Naylor.

Thanks for taking the time to have a look.

Rob

ChristinaS

ChristinaS Report 26 Feb 2017 10:47

George's mother, Mary Ann Purser, married Charles Payne in 1857.

So the three children - George, Eliza and Mary - are under the surname Payne on the 1861 census.

ChristinaS

ChristinaS Report 26 Feb 2017 09:50

Mary and Eliza are on the 1851 census with parents Mary Ann and Jeremiah, a chair maker

Ancestry has mistranscribed the family.

Eliza is Elvia Hupey born 1850
