Just looking into Jane in case connected.

Jane's address at marriage was Ballyboylands, Ballymoney.

Witnesses were Thomas and Isabella Frizzell (nee McMullan).

Thomas (1859) was Jane's brother, and there was another brother James (1852).
Also two sisters - Margaret (1861) and Ellen (1862).

Father David, variously plate layer, railwayman, ganger, railway porter, railway overseer..
Mother Ellen/Helen nee Kane.

David Frizzell died 8th May 1890 at Ballyboyland, of bronchitis and "debilition" of heart, aged 59.
His widow Ellen died 18th Feb 1900 at Union Street, Ballyboyland, aged 70, of "debility".

Another son was William John Kane Frizzell (c1856, baker), who married Matilda Porter Sutherland in 1875:

His mother Ellen presumably died at their home in Union street.
While in Greenock, as well as their children listed on the census, they had a son David, born 1878 @ 4 Watt Street, and died there aged 8 months.


GlasgowLass has already mentioned William & Matilda on page 4 of your other thread, but we didn't establish a link with your Frizzell family.

But with the appearance of Ballymoney in so many records on both sides, there must be some relationship, although maybe distant.

Interesting that in 1891 Jane & George were at 1 Prospecthill Street.

In the same year, James & Hessie were next door, at no 3.

There were Frizzells (of various spellings) in Greenock from 1841-51 onwards, and Levers from the 1861 census onwards.

However, there doesn't seem to have been much intermarrying.

In fact, the only Scottish instance I can see was as recently as 1958 when a Frizzell married a Lever in Greenock.

And George & Jane's marriage is the only Irish instance, as far as I can see.

Interesting my Grandads birth certificate does say George Alexander Lever Frizzell so it's very likely connected. Lever is a most unusual name so it must be a nod to some Lever relative.

I don't know for sure if the Levers even link to Laird's family

It seems too much of a coincidence Mrs Jane Lever was from Ballymoney and had the maiden name of Frizzell
Yet, Laird's grandfather was known as George Alexander Lever Frizzell ??

There is something that I found a while back and although I'm fairly certain that it's relative, I have no idea how it actually relates to your family.

It concerns your grandfather's name....
His birth cert states George Alexander Frizzell but, you seem to have an extra middle name for him, which is LEVER.

Look at this....
George Lever was born in Greenock circa 1867
He was still living in Renfrewshire in 1887 when he married Jane FRIZZELL in Ballymoney
They lived in Greenock after their marriage and by 1901, they were in Paisley
They had one son named George Lever b 1892 Greenock.
I can find no birth record for this child?

On the 1887 marriage cert, Jane states her father's name was David Frizzell, a plate layer?

Jane's approx year of birth on both 1891 and 1901 census is 1866.
I can see that she died in Paisley in 1939 and her age is recorded as 79yrs which equates to a birth of 1860.

It looks to me like Hugh knew of Annie's death at the time.
Annie died 10 Aug 1912

Hugh had already returned to Scotland but, it was their uncle who was informed of her passing.
However, it was Hugh himself who replied to Quarriers on 26 Aug 1912 thanking them for her care and burial.

Hugh wrote to Quarriers again on 16 Aug 1929.
I cannot make out what he was asking for but, it seems to be some kind of documents?
I cannot determine what the acronyms mean

He wrote again on on 22 Aug 1929 stating that he received the documents and also gave them an update on his current status.( ie he is now a carter and married with 8 kids)

I can't make it out but looks like Hugh only found out later about his sisters death....it looks like a note at the end of the letter saying he wrote to thank them in 1916? Residing at 1 Open Shore? Greenock? Looks like further notes for 1922 and Hugh has 8 kids.

The cursive writing is rather a curse to understand-

I'm glad they were able to give you a good amount of information for your money, Laird!

Some very interesting information received today from the Quarriers organisation confirming what has already been said that both my great grandfather Hugh and his little sister Annie where indeed in their care. Some additional information provided too regarding the circumstances of the children going into care and of the circumstances of their mother prior to them being admitted and why extended family where not in a position to take them on......interesting albeit a bit pricey for £25 but towards a god cause.

I can't find a marriage between Hugh and Flora in either Scotland or Ireland.

Nothing clever, Laird!

Knowing there were many ways the surname might be spelled or mistranscribed, I just searched on Ancestry, on the UK Incoming Passenger lists, for any Hugh (no surname specified) arriving in the UK 1901 +/- 1, and then went down the list until I found one that looked as if it could be a version of Frizzell.

Eringobragh1916 no not especially deep pockets, one or two here were kind enough to explainto me i didn't need to buy certificates, i can just buy credits and extract the same info from the People of Scotland records and that has been very helpful but i would be willing to pay the Quarriers as it seems like a worthy cause and perhaps the only way and learning any additional information.

My cousin in Greenock got in touch today and was quite surprised about what i've told him about Hugh being an orphan and being sent to Canada. He relayed this-

Going farther back in time I have discovered that James` father Hugh who married Anne Wilson at Ballymoney N Ireland in 1858 .had remarried after settling in Greenock

Anne died young after she arrived in Greenock and Hugh was widowed with six children

around1868

Hugh employed a servant called Flora Thompson who he married between 1871 and his death in 1879

He's a labourer, as also listed on 1901 Canada census.

Here's Annie in 1901 - in Kilmacolm. I expect Hugh was taken there too at first, after their mother's death. Then he was sent almost immediately to Canada because he was old enough to work - or just because he was a boy. In which case he would know where Annie was - but maybe Quarriers didn't know where he was when she died. Or maybe he just left it to them to register her death :
