Father of Eleanor Maud Lees (b1882 Nottingham)was Edward Thomas Lees (b abt 1858 Attenborough)known to live with his Uncle,George Lees Policeman (b abt 1823 wife Eleanor)in Nottingham. Edward was married to Annie Sheppard in 1879 but the riddle is that Edward Thomas Lees states on his marriage certificate that his Father was Thomas Taylor a Hawker. How did he get the name Lees, Who was his mother and did his Uncle adopt him and his brothers and sisters as they all lived with him for over 2 decades according to the censuses. If anyone can shed light on this family I would be very grateful. I have looked for an Edward Thomas Lees and Edward Thomas Taylor in the Births GRO's from 1856-59 he also had a younger sister Harriet according to the cenus and I cannot find her as a Lees or Taylor either. Any suggestions as to where to look? Thanks Julie Dumayne

Hi Julie
Lee is ..often a Romany name, Taylor can be and a Hawker is a possible profession. You might just try with 'My family were Gipsies'.I have a similar problem with one relative and we guess that there was a second marriage and people were not sure which mother/father was being asked for, birth or step parent .
