Colin
Where children are shown in census forms with a different surname, this generally means that the mother re-married.

I'm not related.I may be wrong but I had a look on the census info and found who I think are your Reuben and wife. See what you think of my "thoughts"!!!

1871. Name is transcribed as "Genlle". Living at St Albans, address area destroyed.

Reuben Gentle 28 Litter/letter? carrier b.Abbots Langley, Herts
Hannah 27 hat sewer b.St Albans
Elizabeth 9 b.St A
Minnie 7 b.St A
Emily 5 b.St A
Arthur 2 b.St A
Frances E 6 months b.St A

By 1881 Reuben has died (aged 35 Mar Quarter 1878 St Albans-volume 3a page 349) and the family are living Old London Rd, St Albans St Peter.

Hannah widow 37 straw hat maker
Elizabeth Blow daughter 19 machine hat sewer
Alfred Blow son in law 21 bleacher
Emily Gentle 15 basket maker
Arthur 12
Harry 8

If those are the right family, the most likely match for Reuben is.....

Try this website. It lists a lot of Gentles, mainly in the Ashwell area. It oculd help!

My great-grandmother, Elizabeth Gentle b. 1861 in St.Albans was oldest child of Reuben & Hannah (nee James). I have traced 2 different Reubens born in Herts. Each seems to have a brother called Amos & a father called William, but one was born 25 years earlier than the other. I can't trace which one is in my direct line. Can anyone help?
