Joseph, his father, was a Waterman possibly working on the river Dearne. Looking at towns and villages near the river, many Hetherington's (Etherington's) lived in these towns. If anyone has either name in their tree, maybe we are related!!
I have now gone back to Humphrey Hetherington b 1670 and my aim is to get back to when the Rievers ruled the borders as one such family were the Hetheringtons.

If I still lived in Sheffield I would have offered to go to Doncaster as my husbands family are from a parish there. But, i now live in Greater Manchester so its not really possible for me to go. The Sheffield Archives are right near Sheffield's train station so I try to go there as often as I can. I am going there on the 8th Nov. Fingers crossed they have Thurnscoe. Claire

No I'm afraid that I live a long way from Doncaster which is where my late Father's roots are. I live on the Isle of wight.

Hi John, Do you live near Doncaster? I think that for Arskey you will definately have to go to the Doncaster archives to go through their records. I thought i saw something for Thurnscoe when i was i was last at the archives so i can try to find a baptism for Benjamin if they SA does hold copies of the Thurnscoe parish records. Regards Claire

Hi John I think it is Benjamins baptism in Thurnscoe (as that is where he says he is born on the census returns) that Claire is offering to look up - that way you can confirm Benjamins parents. Then you can concentrate on the parents marriage. Regards Gail,

John

Hi John, The parish records for Thurnscoe are held at the Doncaster archives. I am not sure but there is a possibility that the Sheffield archives has copies of these parish records. If they do, I can check for a baptism for you when i go there on the 8th November. I know the SA does hold copies of the odd few parishes which come under the Doncaster district. Regards Claire

Hi John The only way this can be answered is via a search of the parish records. Just rechecking census returns for clues. Regards Gail.

Thanks Gail, Benjamin's marriage cert shows him as (H)etherington, but the I.G.A shows him as Etherington. The I.G.A. also shows Thomas as Heatherington which is still a problem today with the spelling of our surname :-) I am pretty sure that Thomas and Sarah are his parents but I need this confirmed as there is another Thomas the same age on the I.G.A. Knowing his parents would steer me in the right direction, where I go from here I don't know as I can't trace Thomas's Father/Mother or Brothers/Sisters!! I'm at a complete loss I'm afraid. Update Yes that's Benjamin and his wife Harriet. It's his Fathers parents that have me foxed!! :-)

Hi John When you posted your last post regarding the Hetherington family, I had a look for a Benjamin Hetherington on the census. The only Benjamin that consistantly comes up is one born Mexborough (Doncaster,Yorkshire), born abt. 1797, unfortunately he is unmarried on the census returns. I had a look on the 1841 in Arksey (sub division of Bentley, Doncaster, Yorkshire) and did not find Benjamin. I did notice the IGI has a Thomas Heatherington marrying a Sarah Booth in 1815 in Arksey in Doncaster. - could be just coincidence. (and may be incorrect). Do you have any other information that may help. Regards Gail Update 1881 census Benjamin Hetherington born Thurnscoe, married to a Harriet born Armthorpe. Benjamin Hetherington Age: 57 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1824 Relation: Head Spouse's name: Harriet Gender: Male Where born: Thunsker, Yorkshire, England Civil Parish: Doncaster County/Island: Yorkshire Country: England Street address: 11 Bentinck St Condition as to marriage: Married Education: Employment status: View Image Occupation: Tailor Registration district: Doncaster Sub-registration district: Doncaster ED, institution, or vessel: 17 Neighbors: View others on page Household Members: Name Age Benjamin Hetherington 57 Harriet Hetherington 52 Source Citation: Class: RG11; Piece: 4691; Folio: 76; Page: 1; Line: ; GSU roll: 1342135.

Could anyone have a look for Benjamin Hetherington born 1823 as I'm not sure if the Thomas Hetherington from Arksey-of-Doncaster is the correct Thomas. Thomas was married to Sarah Booth from Armthorpe. Maybe Thomas came from there also. Thanks John
