Hi Gwyneth, I don't know the first thing about service records if you have any ideas please let me know. I have found the historic museum of Chatham dock in the last few days and it seems only interested in workers on the dockyard. thanks Zoe

If James went to sea his service record should say place of birth etc. Have you been down that route? Gwyn

Hi Helen, Nice to here from u again, I think this chap was a liar. Only joking don't know. Hi, No don't think he was originally from Sheffield, my nan says he was from Kent and went to sea ther in Chatham. She doesn't have a clue on her docks but is adamant it was Chatham. Regards Zoe

Hi all, many thanks for your replies, your right my nan is nearly 90 and bless her I keep saying do you know any of his brothers, No she says he was from Strood. I said not Stroud No she says from STROOD. I can't help but think he lied and was a different person altogether. I have visited his grave and prayed for this man I need to find my nan's dad. Kind regards Zoe

It's possible that James changed his name and was born and appears on census with different surname?

Hi,do you know any of the brothers names and ages? Might be able to look from that angle.Wise to check with nan on a few details. Im doing it for my nan and when i was stuck it turned out she had the name wrong, she gave me the name she was known as to friends not her real name, got there in the end.

Genealogists will only look in the records available to everyone. Either some of your information isn't right, or this chap's records aren't right.

Don't take this the wrong way, but...........your nan could be mistaken about where he came from. Family stories get distorted and added to over the years........ If his father was killed in a train crash, there must be a record of it somewhere.........any idea when and where the crash happened? What was Henry's wife's first name? Reg

Hi, I don't like asking too much tried a while back but no luck. My g grandfather James Hawkins I have his marriage cert and have even visited his grave. He was born 14/12/1870 and married 1917 in Sheffield aged 46 to Rosa Twyman aged 23, he was a bachalour(sorry can't spell that) . My nan says he came from Strood, Kent and on his marriage cert it says his father is Henry Andrew Hawkins a deceased engine driver, my nan says James father died in a train crash and his mother died a couple of years later of a broken heart. James was one of 5 boys so when his parents died he had nothing so at the age of 13 went to sea as a merchant seaman from Chatham dock. I have photos of this man a cert and even seen where he is buried but can't find any reference to his previous life. Thanks for your help Zoe x
