I have just received information from GRO Durham that the marriage information I have is wrong. I had Mary Ann Collins born 1873 Blackhill County Durham. This is the marriage, from Durham BMD: Surname Forename(s) Year District WHARTON William F 1900 Durham Central COLLINS Mary A 1900 Durham Central I asked if they could check the information I had, told Mary Ann married someone with the surname Cunningham between the 1891 census and the 1901 census but can't find it can anyone please help. Betty just to be clear, you are looking for the marriage of a Mary Ann Collins to a Mr Cunningham in Durham. Is that right? Georgina.

Hi Georgina, Yes thats correct, I have her with her family in 1891 census but left before 1901 census. I am sure she married then in Durham. Betty

Have you found Mary on 1901 as Mrs Cunningham? Or are you relying just on what someone told you? Reg

Does she appear as mary Ann cunningham in 1901 census? if so can you tell us the ref please

Hi again georgina, Sorry this is a long story, will try and keep it short. mary Ann had a brother Thomas Collins, his wife died afer having 6th child and mary Ann took in one of the children to look after as Thomas couldn't manage. The child Mary Ann took in is still alive and said her husbands name was Cunningham, just confirmed that today but he can't remember christian name. Betty Hope you can follow this?

I don't really understand what you are saying. Just because a Mary Ann Collins married a William Wharton in 1900 doesn't mean that a different Mary Ann Collins didn't marry a Mr. Cunningham some time between 1891 and 1901, does it? So why does this mean that the marriage information you have is wrong? Kate.

The only marriage in Durham in 1900 of a Mary Ann Collins is this one:- Mary Ann Colins June qtr. 1900, Durham, 10a, 692 However there is no Cunningham marriage in the same qtr in Durham. Kath. x

Hi kate, Sorry this is a mess but I did think Mary Ann married before 1901 census but can't find the correct marriage, info today on phone confirms she did marry a Mr Cunningham not Wharton. Betty

I just had a thought - I believe that Family Relatives has a marriage search facility where you can do a search like Mary Ann Collins marrying a Cunningham between 1891 and 1901? I haven't actually tried this kind of search on there, though, but I think it is supposed to be possible. Kate.

Just checked the June qtr. 1900 under Wharton, and it appears that the Mary Ann Collins who married in Durham in 1900, married William Farrar Wharton. (same district, vol. and page numbers) Kath. x

Hi Betty Your relative probably wouldn't have been alive before 1901 so perhaps doesn't know what was going on then. Ask about any children/dates etc. You may find that Mary Ann married twice. Heather
