So this is her brother Thomas in 1901 with his sister Bridget who has married John McCall. Thomas is not married yet so it must have been later in life that Mary took one of his children. Am I right in thinking that you don't know whether the Mary Ann Collins who married William Farrar Wharton was your Mary Ann or a different one? So if your Mary Ann was married to somebody before she married Mr. Cunningham, her first married name could have been anything, really. It would help if we could find a birth for William Farrar Wharton, and then we might be able to find him on the 1901 and see if his wife could be your Mary Ann or not. But I can't see his birth (or his death) on FreeBMD... back if I find him some other way.... Kate.

Hi everyone, You see I had this 1901 census info on what i thought was mary Ann Collins and her husband but i have been told it was the wrong Mary Ann because she married a Mr Cunningham. 1901 Living St Marys Street, Boston Spa Frederick Wharton abt 1900 Boston Spa, Yorkshire, England Son Boston Spa Yorkshire Mary Wharton abt 1873 Sherburn Hill, Durham, England Wife Boston Spa Yorkshire William Wharton abt 1876 Boston Spa, Yorkshire England Head Boston Spa Yorkshire Betty Name different Mary instead of Mary Ann?

H everyone, Anyway thanks so much for all your help with Mary Ann, I will just have to keep trying, maybe some day I will find the information. Betty

Kate Report 25 Apr 2006 11:22

Right, it's beginning to make sense now. Is Sherburn Hill in or near Blackhill? I'm afraid I know very little about Durham geography! If we can find THAT William Wharton's birth, perhaps we can find out if he was William Farrar Wharton or not. Kate.

It does look as though the William Wharton you have found on the census might be the same one, because FreeBMD has a William F*s Wharton born Sep 1876 Wetherby, and Wetherby includes (or included) Boston Spa. But there isn't a pair of spectacles, so I shall have to look for the image on ancestry to see if it says Farrar. Back in a long while - unless somebody else can load the page quicker than me and check it? Kate.

But in the meantime, this is Yorkshire BMD's version of his name: Yorkshire Birth indexes for the years: 1876 Surname Forename(s) Sub-District Registers At Reference WHARTON William Fara Boston Spa Leeds BSPA/4/44 Kate.

Hi Kate, It may be clear to you but to me the whole thing is as clear as mud. Sorry it's a Scottish expression! Betty

Georgina

Georgina Report 25 Apr 2006 11:36

Betty you said earlier that Mary Ann only had 1 child who is still alive, can you tell us this childs name & year of birth. Georgina.

Kate

Kate Report 25 Apr 2006 11:42

Betty, I never knew that 'clear as mud' was Scottish. We say it in England too! I have managed to load the Sep 1876 births index page now, and there is a birth for William Farra Wharton on there, district Wetherby, which includes Boston Spa. Volume 9a p 126. So this must be the William Wharton you have found on the 1901 census, and he did marry a Mary Ann Collins in Durham in 1900. But I still don't know whether Blackhill and Sherburn Hill are the same place? Anyway, if they are, then what I would do if I were you is get the William Farrar Wharton / Mary Ann Collins marriage certificate and see if Mary Ann's father's name matches your Mary Ann's father (or specify father's name as a checking point if you would rather). Then if it turns out to be her who married William, the info you have been given must be wrong in some way. Perhaps William died and she remarried to a Mr. Cunningham? Perhaps William changed his name to Cunningham? Kate.

♥Betty Boo from Dundee♥ Report 25 Apr 2006 11:43

Hi Georgina, No i don't know how many children Mary Ann had, the person I have the information from is her brother Thomas's child. Thomas's wife died after giving birth to her sixth child, husband couldn't cope and work so four of the children were cared for by his sister and brother wives. The child that went to Mary Ann wasn't born until 1929 his name was Michael Collins and he is 77 years olld now. it's him who gave me the informations that Mary Ann's husband had the surname Cunningham. Hi everyone, This Michael who gave me the information is also doing the Collins family tree. Do you think maybe he is trying to put me off the track or something so he can tell everyone in the family that he was first to complete the tree?? Would anyone really do such a thing? Betty

Georgina

Georgina Report 25 Apr 2006 11:59

Betty maybe Mary Ann did marry William Wharton & he died during WW1, Mary could have then married a Cunningham before Michael Collins was born and he would have been none the wiser. Georgina.

♥Betty Boo from Dundee♥ Report 25 Apr 2006 12:03

Hi Georgina, Yes that may well have happened. Didn't think about that, with all the info coming in never thought about WW1. I will back up a bit and go over everything I have again, double check it and work from there. Thanks to everyone for all your help, you have all been great! Big thank you!!! Betty
