Hi everyone. I have re-read everything and think William Edge did marry Hannah France as his second wife because the children fit better and that it is possible William's first wife called Ann is one of the Edge Deaths cited earlier. I will pursue this line of enquiry. I have checked quarterley marriage enteries back from 1851 to 1844 for william edge and ann walker and have not found a match but I will try again in case I missed something....they are very popular names. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- My ann junior did mary a Platt and I have her on all the census information Thanks everybody Lynn X ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

No luck with William and Ann's marriage yet, but did your Ann (junior) marry George Platt? And move to Lancashire? In which case she had children called Emma and Hannah (among many) which suggests that the William and Hannah family on those censuses is the right one, at least. I'm so confused with these people! There is an Emily Edge age 22 born Wybunbury working as a servant for the Jackson family in Coppenhall Monks in 1871, so she would be the right age to be Emma using a different version of her name. If only we could find Ann (junior) in 1861 though!! If William and Ann senior did get married, it should be between the births of George and Ann junior. But I think you said you had already searched those years and not found it. Kate.

HI lynn, I have just read all your messages on this thread and i understand why you are all getting so confused, i would be too, hope you get it all sorted. If it is the shropshire area you are looking at then give me a shout as i live in shropshire and sometimes go to the record office, i could do a lookup for you. Good luck Tracy

My head is now spinning with Edges and Walkers. It looks as though both were very popular names in that area! Anyway, this could be Hannah in 1851 in which case she is William's second wife, or at least second partner: Hannah France abt 1825 Bickley, Cheshire, England Servant Agden Cheshire Which would suggest that the France children were maybe illegitimate, but maybe their father was not William as they are not listed as his children on the 1861 census. (Hannah is unmarried in 1851, if it is her.) I think I will also have to pack it in for the night, I can't take any more of these Edges! I wonder what happened to Emma, and where Emily came from? Could they be the same person? Kate.

Two possible deaths for Ann, from FreeBMD (unfortunately age at death isn't given this early on): Deaths Dec 1851 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Edge Ann Nantwich 19 139 Edge Ann Nantwich 19 142 I now have a niggling little worry, how can you be sure that the birth certificate you have is for the right Ann? If you don't have her on any census with her parents, are you just going by the fact that the father's names and occupations on birth and marriage certs match? And the age she gives on her marriage cert and later censuses presumably more-or-less match the birth cert you have, but I just wonder if one of the deaths above couldn't be the baby whose birth cert you have, and the other one her mother? I do hope not! But William is a common name, and labourer a common occupation. I don't suppose you want to spend £14 getting two death certs that might be nothing to do with your family if you can help it, though, so let's see what else we can find... Kate.

Don't know if you noticed the William / Hannah marriage that Jane posted up on page 1 of this thread?: Marriages Mar 1857 ----------------------------- Edge William Whitchurch 6a 950 France Hannah Whitchurch 6a 950 I would think that Hannah was William's second wife, the France children are hers from her first marriage, George Walker is Ann senior's from before she married William (but called Edge on the 1851 census, not unusual for stepchildren or indeed children born before the parents were married), but we need to find Ann jr. on the 1861. And Hannah on the 1851. So I will have a look and see what I can find... Kate.

You often find two people with the same surname on the same marriage page and sometimes it is because they were cousins marrying each other, sometimes siblings having a double wedding. Anyway, I'm not sure about all this Hannah business - your Ann isn't on the census with them, is she? I'll just look through the whole thread now I have a bit more time... Kate.

tt borders Cheshire, Flintshire and Shropshire. Half way between chester and wolverhampton I think. It just struck me odd that they both have the edge surname getting married in the same place at the same time - but maybe i'm just getting tired myself now. They maybe not getting married to each other of course. will check out the quarters for that year. I think I will pick this up tommorow after work. Really can't thank you and Margaret enough for the help you have given me tonight. Turned into a long saga alright. I never would have got it without you both. Thankyou seems a bit lame but ..THANKYOU!!!!! Lynn XXXX

Oh my god its just hit me.................................. Margarets middle name is Frances, whats the betting on when they were giving the names to the enumerator, they said Margaret Frances, then next child, and it was assumed that Frances/ France was their surname, so gave the name to all other children too !!!!!!!!!!!! makes sense now , lol esp as they Edges in 1871 ! Lynn, put your head back on, lol

I searched family.org and thereare no babtisms for France children. What is going on? Should i just purchase the marriage we found anyway and see if there is anymore infor on it. Don't really like chucking potentially £7.00 down the drain but I can't see a way forward. Lynn
