Karen - if all you know is two fairly common surnames, with no date or place, your only option is to trawl through the indexes in hope.

Fran: sad news for you, sorry. Watkin Wynn, aged 5 on the 1851 census, was a pauper in Camberwell workhouse. HO107/1580, folio 561, page 2.

Hi Michael, Thanks for trying. I already had the information for the Watkin at the workhouse. Hard to imagine him being the same Watkin when his father William was a surgeon, and his older sisters were at a very posh boarding school. Then again, with his mum deceased at that time, anything is possible especially when one finds out that William had a drinking problem. Died of exhaustion from abuse of spirits in 1862. Maybe he was indisposed at the times of census. :))))) Thanks again, Fran Wynne

Fran, you never know, anything could happen with these ancestors - and usually did. I haven't been able to find another Watkin Wynne of the right age on that or any subsequent census, sorry; the closest is one who's 42 on the 1891. Michael

Michael Report 30 Mar 2006 21:34

Mel, There's a William Joseph Cavanagh born Middlesborough reg district, June 1910, volume 9d page 632. If you order the certificate from the GRO you can ask them to check the parents' names match to see if that's your grandfather. Once you have the information from that I can try to find out a bit more for you; it's difficult to get any further solely with the information you have at the moment.

Scott: No luck with yours, sorry. This is the closest match, and it doesn't look very likely; although Thomas and Isabella are about the right age, the relationships are wrong and there's no sign of Robert. Hi Amy, The Ancestry website is wwwdotancestrydotcodotuk (obviously the 'dot's should be . but GR deletes it if you do that) and BMD is part of it. Some records are free to search, most importantly the BMD (births, marriages and deaths) and the 1881 census. All the other available censuses (1851, 1861, 1871, 1891 and 1901) and most other records are only accessible to paying members. Michael

Michael Report 1 Apr 2006 21:54

Ellen, Sorry, Ancestry has very few records for Scotland, so the chances of finding what you're looking for are pretty remote. Michael

Hi Michael, I've lost the copies I took of some of censuses. Could you let me have the details of the following - I'm sure I've found them in the past so hopefully I have enough details not to prove too tricky :-) Alfred Kember (born 1863 Kent) married to Elizabeth Clara (also 1863 but I think has some dodgy ages) - Kent 1891 and 1901 (with son Percy in 1901 I think) Albert Childs (born 1858 Kent) married to Edith (also 1858 Kent). Daughter Edith (1885 Kent) - 1891 Surrey and 1901 (back in Kent with son, Albert). Thomas Uings (born 1858 Kent) and married to Ellen (also 1858 Kent) - Kent 1891 and 1901 (though I think 1891 was mistranscribed as Kings or Wings). The children were William, Mary Ellen, Esther, Edith, Elizabeth, Leonard and Rose. I'd appreciate any you have time to find! Thank you

Michael

Michael Report 4 Apr 2006 17:37

Ruth - do you mean 1853? Someone born 1953 wouldn't show up on many early censuses!

Hi Michael, Could I ask for an 1861 census look up for this family please. The family are George Edmund Thomas Head, Eliza Thomas Wife and one son that I know of William George Thomas born 1857 Saint Pancras, London, Middlesex. I know this is a bit vague but I have no other details this is all I have from William George's birth certificate. Many thanks Kim

Hi Michael If you could have a a quick look just to confirm something for me I'd be really grateful. Please would you look for a Thomas Smart b1808 ish in Thornton Steward Yorks in the 1861 census. I only have details of his birth/christening. and he can't be found in 1851 or in his home village in 1841 so I think it likely that he didn't live very long. I'd just like to double check to see if he was around in 1861. Many thanks Kate
