You can search BIRTHS DEATHS and MARRIAGES 1837 - 1983 for FREE at Ancestry – even if you aren’t a subscriber. Go to this website: http://www.ancestry(.)co.uk/search/default.aspx Copy and paste address into the address bar of your web browser -REMOVE BRACKETS from web address. Look for Births Marriages and Deaths - - England & Wales, BMD Index (Beta) Choose Birth Death or Marriage Put in the person's name and likely year of birth, death or marriage. The results show the four quarters and the surname at the BEGINNING of the page and surname at the END of the page, so from this you can estimate if your person's surname is likely to appear on this page. If so, you just click on the image viewing page icon which has a little blue magnifying glass on a sheet of text (at the end of each search result). You will then be taken to the page and you will see surnames in alphabetical order. Look for your person. There are plenty of navigation tools to take you forward or back if you are just a page out. Back and Forward Arrows plus magnification. You can also save the image to your PC if you wish to do so. At the very top of the image viewing screen, you will see something like this: You are here: Search England & Wales, Birth Index: 1837-1983 (Beta) 1952 Jan-Feb-Mar K You can click into the part that says Jan-Feb-March (on the screen in question) and search through the whole of the K's for January February March if your page seems to be missing. Hope this helps. Cheers, Horatia PS Now people can search for themselves for free it is a great bonus!

Hi to everyone again Sorry didnt get back to you but when i went back on to check before bed it was down. The name I was looking for was George Wickman. They had a daughter in July 1838 I think in Reigate but dont have any records yet. Jane Lane is a mystery in herself as she had a son in 1827 called James so presume she was married before or not ! Robyn, I also had this problem as my relative was the only one on the page, but some-one kindly looked it up for me on family relatives site. It is pay as you go. Regards Sara

Might seem a daft question, but have you tried putting the name you expect in the new marriage index, available on Ancestry? It might give you the same quarter, volume number, with the page number unclear? (sorry if this seems bit garbled, it's early and I haven't had my cup of tea yet!)

Could someone advise me re finding out the spouse of a marriage? On free bmd Marriages Sep 1837 is : Jane Lane Greenwich Vol 5 Page 211 but the name that I was hoping for doesnt come up. There are 4 women listed but only 3 men. Is there any way of finding the fourth name other than ordering the marriage cert which Im loath to do in case it is the wrong one, also the delay living out in NZ as I do. Any suggestions would be welcome. Many thanks Robyn NZ
