Well guys and gals yet another gaggle of freeloaders on here tonight. My pet aversion,I have had some beauties on my thread recently. Eg Can you look for a marriage between Joe Bloggs and Annie Smith and can you find them on all censuses.NO dates given for births,no places of birth, not even a county. I gave them short shrift and have added them to my 'blacklist'. I blame 'Who do you think you are' they watch and see immediate results 'found 'by the 'celebrity' and get totally the wrong idea, that you can trace your family back to goodness knows when in 50 minutes or so.They have no idea of the years of hard slog it can take. A lot of people are just not doing any research of their own,if they were we would not get all these outlandish requests. The other thing that annoys me is that by putting a thread on the board requesting lookups everybody chips in with duplication and triplication of effort when we could be helping others. Anyone got any ideas how this can be avoided.? Cheers all Mary

Alice is it the Richard who has thanked you for the 1851 look-up further down the page? Georgina.

Mary, When the same info is duplicated, it's a good indication that the info is actually what is being asked for ..... we can't ALL be wrong ! Your thread is great, and many like it. It all helps. The only thing that I personally noticed, back in the days that I have offered lookups, is that it puts the thread holder under a lot of responsibility and sometimes 'pressure' to come up with the goods. A thread requesting help can be carried by few or many people all helping. It's 6 of one and half a dozen of the other. Elaine ;-)

Glitter babe, that is horrific, you did all that work without a thankyou. I am absolutely down on my knees grateful to people on here, I wouldnt be half the way back without you lot. I cant sit here so much now cos damn sciatica but I have to say that I ignore anyone who doesnt even put please in their requests. I could scream when someone answers them when they are so rude - but I guess its cos there are so many good hearted people on here that the board is such a success. THANKS everyone, you all know who you are who have helped me incredibly over the last couple of years.

Alice, I'll just leave it as a 'close' relationship babe ! I hasten to add, that at one point it became a threesome and then more and more people came to the rescue. Can't remember exactly which one of us burst the bubble. ;-) Elaine ;-)

Don't you just wish that GR made this a bit more BOLDER: Please note: members who do lookups do so out of a desire to help and are not paid or endorsed by GR. However there are a few of us that do get carried away when helping and before we know it we have produced a mini tree for the person asking.......sucking all the fun out of the research....... getting carried away !! Maybe some see this and just think we did for so and so etc etc..... make sense? lol With that said I do agree many think its a quick fix, most just need a gentle hint and some guidance :)) Much happiness Debi

Thanks Reg, I am so stupid I just look up anything I might be able to help with, maybe I should be more selective with who I help. Georgina.

I agree Deborah, and understand what your saying ... I think that we do have to bear in mind that BMD's are FREE .... along with 1881 & 1901 census (at the moment) ....... but lets not forget that not everyone has access to the census's ...... and I think that a lot of help is given with census .. way back to 1841. This is understandable ... and I do it myself Lets not stop helping those who can't help themselves with the census's. Elaine ;-)

Georgina Don't sell yourself short..........you do a great job of helping. I think a lot of us get a bit carried away when we find something someone has asked for, and we do more than they asked for.........loads of censuses, plus bmd's, and all because we actually enjoy doing it!! In spite of everything.............. Reg

Elaine I agree with you, I still ask for help sometimes, but the point of this thread was someone deleting because basically he had been told how to do it himself. We all have to learn, but a free site and explanation on how to search just smacks of cant be bothered. Want others to do it for me. Margaret

Only having just started asking for help on the message board (although I've been a GR member for a couple of years), I think you are all wonderful. Every request has been responded to promptly, with terrific suggestions and with courtesy. So on behalf of those people who 'forget' to say it, I thank you all very much!!! Regards, Lewella xxx

Reggie I know what you mean. I have been known to bombard someone with info once I find it. Afterwards, I thought, I wonder if that was too much to take in all at once. Margaret

Margaret, There have been far too many just recently who have deleted for the same reason. Its so annoying ... and like others have said, even more so when you have spent quite some time actually searching for the info ... and then return to find the thread already gone - or it disappears soon afterwards. I think we have to be vigualent (sp), ...... I have certainly become more aggressive with my 'replies' of late ... and I do on occassion have to walk away and do some housework (not good for me !!) ... or worse, I shout at the screen !!! ........I can hear them coming with the straight jacket !! Elaine ;-)

Elaine I'm afraid I have my standard answer that BMD's are free on Ancestry on Notepad, ready to copy and paste into the thread. I got fed up of having to keep typing it. LOL I wont do census look ups anymore. Ancestry is so worth the money now, I dont know how anyone who is serious about genealogy can manage without it. Why do people worry how to cancel it? Why would you want to? Margaret
