It is my fault, thinking at last I found him, should have guessed it would not have been that easy, especially with this surname!! Right, just located the marriage certificate copy, Evan Davies age 30yrs Bachelor, Driver ASL ? address given 7 Lansdowne Place Blackheath, father John Davies deceased General Labourer. Winifred Lilian Maisey 21 yrs spinster living at 87 Tressillian Road Brockley, father Walter Leon Maisey Sergant Major R.F.A. Married 2nd August 1916 After they married they settled in Lewisham where they raised their family, first child born 1917 Irene Gladys in Lewisham. I have contacted my cousins that I CAN FIND!! none of them can remember him, he died before I was born. There is an older cousin in Australia, to whom I have written but not replied as yet- 6 months later!! guess he is not interested. What else can I do? Sue

You know your Evan died in WGC- at least i think you do. did Evan and his wife have children?Of course they did- what maiden name for mother is given on their birth certs? where and when was the first one born?

This is probably partly my fault. I gave you a possible suspect from 1901 and didn't check for any others :(

Janet Evan died end January 1948 in Hatfield Herts, I have his burial details, he lived in Welwyn Garden City Herts. I think John was a labourer, will need to find the certificate Sue

Sue, On mar cert, does it give a profession for John, the father? When did Evan die and at what age? I think this was your original problem, to do with Evan's age at death? Jay

Jess On his wedding certificate it states John as his father's. I dare say I did wrong, but assumed!!!!!!!! this family in 1901 was them and tried to work from that, go on tell me it is a BIG mistake, I can see it coming!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Sue

where have you got your grandads parents names from if you havent got his birth cert?

Here goes/ marriage can't recall exact date off hand, July-Sept Q 1916 Evan Davies age 30 yrs batchelor, father's name John (deceased) and Winifred Lilian Maisey in Lewisham So going on those details above I went and follwed Evan with fsather's name as John and worked out the age range. This is what I found. 1901 living 19 Atwell Street Camberwell London John Davies head, born about 1858 in Wales, Provisions merchant living Camberwell Elizabeth Davies wife brn abt 1857 in Wales Evan Davies son brn abt 1885 in Bethnal Green London so by going on that above I then had 1891 29a-30Kings Block Aldgate London John Davies head brn 1858 South Wales Dairymam/Milkman Elizabeth Davies wife brn 1857 South Wales Evan was not there at the census time, I found him (?) at 15 Norwich Court London - staying with Morgan Davies head Eleanor Davies wife Evan Davies nephew, all same deatils, except Clerkenwell instead of Bethnal Green. This has been my biggest brick wall, and had at last thought it was starting to crumble!! I might have gone wrong, so any help would be very much appreciated. Thanking you all Sue

Thank you all for your input, it is appreciated. Well, if THIS is my grand dad in the 1901 Census, has father born about 1858, mother 1857, my grand dad 1885. Doing my arithmatic, the sums do not add up, as it would have his dad married and fathered him by the age of 10 yrs, I doubt even today that could happen!!!!!!!!!!!!! My grand dad does not appear on the 1881 Census, with his parents Maybe I have the wrong family, !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Sue

Susan, Do you mean age given on death certificate differs from what you thought it would be, having looked at his marriage certificate? People sometimes lied about age when they married - rounded it up or down, depending on age of spouse. Age at death is given by the informant and is therefore the age they think the deceased was - not necessarily correct. Have you found him in 1901 census - how old was he then? Jay

so all you have for sure is one date? who says that one is right? The least reliable date is one that is given on death - after all you are relying on the person that registered the death knowing..... marriage - age? whatever he told the minister - always doubtful!! various reasons - too young to marry otherwise , without parental consent. - A lot older than his bride, so he became younger maybe - or vice versa The one to be relied upon is his birth - always the most accurate of the three. jess

Hi Sue, You have lost me here, What do you mean that you cant get death cert without birth cert ,? If you know that it is him. Sorry didnt notice it was to change his age? but why bother. my grandads age on death cert is out by 9 years June

I do have a copy of his marriage, his age is stated as 30 yrs, that was in 1916. Confused or what!!!

Susan if you don't have his birth cert, how do you know the age doesn't tally?

Well, I have been in touch with The Registry Office re death certificate for my grand dad. Yes it is him, but the age on death certificate does not tally with age when married!! For the age to be changed, I have to have his birth certificate!!, wouldn't be so bad, but name like Davies there are thousands!! What can I do, as I just dont know anymore!! One big headache!!! Sue
