Is it a bird? is it a plane?

Is it a bird? is it a plane? Report 10 Sep 2005 20:49

Can anyone help me? I'm trying to find a Henry Rowe b. abt 1858 (which would make him approx 13 in 1871) born in Newport, Monmouthshire. His mother is Ann Rowe, b. abt 1821 in Silverton, Devon (making her about 50?). Really need to find out who is in this household. Thanks Sarah

Thanks Zoe and Fiona. I don't suppose it has William's occupation? It doesn't sound like the Henry and Ann are related to my John afterall as he's married by 1871 but it was worth a long shot! The family are all involved in coaching and horses and the postal service from what I can tell and the Henry I'd found in 1881 was a groom. His mother Ann was born in Silverton which is where my John claims to be from.

My John was a postilion in 1867 when he married and a post boy in 1878 when his daughter Alice was born so I don't think thats my family afterall :( back to the drawing board! And the shame is that John's father was called William so a lot of it was fitting!

The second 1871 search I'd like is for John Rowe, born about 1845 in Silverton Devon. His wife is Mary/Mary Ann Rowe b abt 1845 in Bristol. They should also have a daughter by the same name born abt 1870 also in Bristol. His occupation in 1867 is Postilion which I understand is an occupation to to with the postal service. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

John's father William is also listed as a postilion in 1867 on his son's marriage certificate.

Hi Sarah, Do you have a birth certificate for Mary Ann born 1870 or is it just from censuses? Is this the family in 1881? I must admit its just from the census returns but she does have a brother born approx 1871 (according to census returns) so I had hoped she'd be around by 1871. There does seem to be a strong connection with Mary's family in Bristol though. In 1881 one of her children is with her mother. Perhaps Mary and her new daughter (as it was her first child) were with Mary's mother, Mary Lewis (b. abt 1815 in Monmouthshire) and John was alone? Thank you both for all your hard work though, they're a tough family to crack!

Do you have Alice's birth certificate with mothers maiden name? Might help to try and trace when her parents married. Fiona.

It does say on the census for the Rowe family in 1871 that John is Married. Fiona.

I have Alice's parents marriage already. They married 31st August 1867 in Newport, Monmouthshire. Their names were John Rowe and Mary Ann Lewis. Mary came from Bristol and in 1881 their daughter Florentine/Florrie was at Mary's mother's house in Bristol, in the area of St. Philip and Jacob (out).

Would it be worth trying to find Mary's mother in 1871 to see if Mary is with her?

That still leaves Mary Ann Rowe b. 1845 in Bristol missing though. Perhaps its worth looking for her mother and brother in 1871? Her mother is Mary Lewis b. abt 1815, Llangibby, Monmouth Her brother is Frances Lewis, b. abt 1848, Bristol
