Hi, I'm desperately trying to find meadon's in newcastle under lyme. I have found quite a few but don't know which ones i am related to. Here's what I've got so far but i may be going down the wrong thread. Josiah Meadon Born c1800 married Elizabeth (last name unknown) Children: Elizabeth b.1840 Anne b.1826 Emma b.1832 Josiah b.1834 (i think this is my great great great grandfather) Josiah Jr married Elizabeth James in 1896 in Newcastle under Lyme. Children: Helen b.1861 Arthur b.1863 (i think this is my great great grandfather and his middle name should be James) They might have older children that had moved out at the time of the 1881 census Arthur married Elizabeth Thompson in 1886 in Prescot Lancashire. (the reason why i think the arthur from newcastle is my relative is because his sister helen also married in prescot 2 years before and their father (josiah junior) died in Rochdale where my nan was born) Children: Nora born Warrington 1903 Lilian born 1897 Rochdale Dorothy born 1897 Rochdale Died 1899 Rochdale Nellie born 1893 Rochdale (my great grandmother) Nellie Meadon married Percy Thompson in West Derby Liverpool in 1914 Children: 8 of them and i'm not listing them as i fear my eyeballs will start to bleed. Suffice to say Sheila Elizabeth Thompson born 1924 is my grandmother Well that's all I've got. If anybody has any further info about josiah meadon (senior or junior) or anybody else in this tree please contact me. Or if anybody has access to census records for newcastle and can find and other family members i missed out i'd be glad of the help. Also if anybody find that i've been going down the wrong track PLEASE tell me. I would rather know now than in 6 months when i've done a full background only to find out it's not my family Anyway if you've made it through all that and not got bored congratulations and thanks Sarah

Hi Sarah I notice you 'think' that these people are your relatives. Do you have of the birth/marriage certificates which would confirm it? I'm still trying to get the rest of your message clear in my head at the moment, it's a little hard to read! Do you know where Josiah Snr was from, was he from Newcastle under Lyme? Sam

I put loads of spaces in while i was typing it it must have been too long. I know that arthur meadon and all of the ones after him are my relations but i can't find arthur in liverpool and the only other artur meadon i could find was the one in newcastle. My grandfather did get married in prescot and so did a helen meadon which i think is the one from newcastle also. that's what makes me think they're my relatives, i don't have any birth certificates as i've only been looking for a week but i'm going to get arturs when i have the money. If anybody knows how to split the message up i'd be very grateful as even i don't understand it now Thanks to everyone for their help

hang on , hang on , we've only just started!! in reply to splitting it up, add the bulk of your message as a first reply, with only a word or two in the first box. I'm struggling to find Meadon in 1901.. anyone else? jess

Yes Sam i think that's them, I have only looked in the 1881 census and william's not there because he must have moved out by then. Thanks for that, is there any way you could look in a later census and try and find out about arthur. sorry if that's cheeky thanks again Sarah

To Jess: Yes nellie is definately the one in Rochdale. I think the other ones are of the same family though. To Sam. That's them! thanks so much. We have been searching for this mythical older brother of nellie's called William Herbert but he hasn't shown up anywhere before the William H must be him. I didn't know they'd moved to St helens, they must have moved to rochdale shortly after. thanks again

Sam They could be living in rochdale or warrington in 1901. The twins were born in rochdale in 1897 and then nora was born in warrington in 1903. As for Josiah i found a josiah meadon who died in rochdale in 1896 aged 61 on lancashire bmd so he must have followed arthur there but stayed behind when they moved to warrington. I've never found any record of josiah's wife elizabeth dying there though.

Jess That's actually quite funny as we've had a few family arguments about which way round it was, my great aunt swears it's herbert william and my mum thinks it's william herbert, so i suppose both of them are right. I'll never hear the end of it because i thought he didn't exist! Thanks Sarah

Jess Does it say who Arthur's (the grandson) parents are because as far as i know arthur(sr) didn't have a son called arthur. It could be helen's (arthurs sister).

Sarah

Sarah Report 29 Apr 2005 21:52

That's helen's husband John Samuel Bate, (she must be the Ellen)
