Could anyone help with a look up for Maesteg, Glam

Hi all

I don't know if you are looking at this entry any more but, if you do, I wanted to let you know how I had got on.

I was pretty certain that my William had been born in Maesteg and I had his birthday on an old letter (1960's) which I had received from him.

I wasn't 100% confident with the online BMD record so I looked up the Bridgend RO and sent off a 'shot in the dark' email. Not only did I get a reply the next day, confirming that they had the record, I received the certificate five days after I had sent off the cheque!

But I still have a mystery. I still can't find anyone that looks like him on the 1881 census and according to that census(6 months or so after his birth) the property where William was born was recorded as unoccupied.

I am hoping to get what I think is Mary's marriage certificate (to his stepfather) 10 years later so maybe I will give you an update shortly.

Thanks for your help and advice.

Olwen.

Olwen,

My suggestion would start in the area of Maesteg, Glamorgan around 1860 for the birth of Mary Griffiths. If she had William in 1880, subtract 20 (age) would be abt. 1860. The second thing is do we know the District that Maesteg falls in. I just did a search on the BMD from 1850-1865 in Glamorgan and many records came up. You would need to narrow the search down to the district.

How is it that you know his exact DOB?

Maesteg would come under Bridgend district

What was his stepfather's name?

We need all the info if we're to try to help...........

Thanks all for your replies.

As far as I know William was born in Maesteg, Glamorgan but I don't know where his mother was born or how old she was.

I've tried the 1881 census and BMD but none of the William Griffiths of that age seem quite right - they each seem to be part of a complete family unit. He was illegitimate and later took his step father's name but I'm not sure when his mother married. I haven't hand any luck with that either.

It seems to me that you have the birth cert..........correct me if I'm wrong!

Assuming that you do, please tell us his name, where he was born, and also what his mother's occupation was.........

He should be on the 1881 census..........have you checked it? It is free on www.familysearch.org and also on Ancestry

Olwen,

Do you know when and where Mary Griffiths was born?

Olwen,

Where was this son born? What county? You can look up the birth on the BMD Index with just the date if you don't have the given name but you know the county. I just did a "Griffiths" name search for Dec Qtr 1880 and many births came up. You need to narrow it down to at least the county.

Trying to find Mary Griffiths who had a son on 5 October 1880 - childs father unknown.

I've done as much research on the internet as I can with no definite answers and cant get to the records office.

How easy is to look up someone if you know the exact date of birth?
Any help or advice would be very much appreciated. Thanks.
